brendywendy im not sure we had a single serious attacking move yesterday
everyone was guilty of giving the ball away, and seeming to lack the normal footballing skills required to score a goal
why are you singling seol out?

I'm not, but this thread was talking specifically about him and he did show similar tendancies last season as well. It's not a one off.

For what it's worth I don't think anyone esle really showed much ability on the ball yesterday, even Shorey showed some poor touches and lose passes. In my opinion that all stems from the fact that we pretty much abandoned any team shape to go man-for-man accross the pitch and so when we did get the ball we didn't have anyone to receive a pass.

Seol just makes more of a habit of playing like it at other times of the year BUT he has a role to play in the team. It'd just be nice if he was a bit better at it more often than he has been.

Hoop Blah Depends what your point was!

Have a little read of the thread and you might spot some of my posts, saving you from having to guess what my 'point' was... I wouldn't bother though.

For some reason I did bother. I still can't see a point you're trying to make though. Any clues?

The first thing Seol needs to do in order to shut up the boo boys is actually put some effort in. He doesn't and so the stick continues.

Coppel - Get shot of him to Fulham and buy a replacement.

Ronaldo, Wright-Phillips, Bentley ..... wait a minute, they might be better but can we afford them.

Let's try for cheap enough, but better than Seol - just give me a few minutes ..........

We had the debate a month ago and there were numerous names. As I've already said Kightly should be top of any list with regards to wingers.

don't know if anyone's said this but the commentary team on 107 did single him out as not working as hard... and to those who say it wasn't his sort of game, well fair enough but i have seen seol work hard and get stuck in on occasion so obviously he's not incapable of doing it. so why he can't get up for it and do it at old trafford playing to try an earn his place in the team i really don't know...

if he is the same on wednesday night in front of his home crowd then it's a cause for concern

He was the same many times last season. It's already a cause concern.

I'm not Seols biggest fan and I think he still has alot to prove to justify his place, however it really annoys me how every little mistake he made yesterday was picked up on by the Reading fans and was moaned at.
If we all moaned at every mistake made by every player we'd never stop, but people seem to have it in their heads thats Seols rubbish and look out for things to prove it. The fact is if Seol and Hunt made an indentical mistake people would whinge at Seol but not at Hunt.

Scrolled through some of earlier posts, so sorry if repeating this, but listened to game on radio five yesterday and commentary team were very critical of Seol, while he was on and continuing after he came off, even joking when he came back on the sidelines to warm down that he should have thought about actually warming up when he was on the pitch in the first place.

I've no axe to grind either way. I remember a post when he was signed from someone who knew a Wolves fan saying he was notorious for blowing hot and cold and that seems about right. When he's good he's well worth having in the squad but I fear he's set his heart on being elsewhere so ship him out and trust SSC to bring in a below-the-radar bit of quality for a punt.

I had to laugh when he was sent out in a bib to "warm down" after he was substituted. That's the first time I've seen that done in the middle of a match - or perhaps he was sent out to warm up, having failed to break into a sweat all afternoon. :?

Anyway, he possesses great skills and can create and score great goals, but yesterday was completely the wrong sort of game for him.

Tricky question now - if you were SSC, would you drop him for the Chelsea game on the basis of his poor showing, or would you give him another start in the hope of keeping his confidence up?

I'd start with Oster, and bring on Seol only if it turns out to be an open free-scoring game.

it's a good point actually. in SC's 'tactical masterclass' that we got yesterday this was probably the one glaring error - not his type of game at all and Oster might well have been better suited but then SC probably had something like WH away last year in mind and thought, he's got to be worth starting just in case...

I suspect Seol will now play as the advanced man in Wednesday's 4-5-1

Some comments on here have suggested that just because fans are critisizing Seol's performance at Old Trafford that it means that they hate him and are singling him out....

Nobody hates Seol........... Everybody wants Seol playing well and working hard for the team week in and week out.

Fans are well within their rights to critisize a player either in an online forum or by booing at a match if they don't see any effort from the player. It doesn't mean the player is disliked. It means the fans are not happy with his performances and want to see better from him.

I personally think Seol will get better. He only started playing and training hard with the team towards the end of the Peace Cup..... He has been injured before that and it takes time to find fitness and form.

Its a little early to judge and be overly critical of Seol. He defintely looks out of sorts at the moment. He is definitely not trying hard enough and his touches and passing are incredibly poor and that is supposed to be his strength. He had a few crossing opportunities at Old Trafford as well and he over hit at least 50% of those which is also quite poor.

I'm sure in the next few weeks he will find his sharpness and his form. If he can regain more fitness following his injuries then he might be able to try harder as well. Only the management knows whether Seols game is half hearted at the moment because he simply doesn't have the fitness or if he can't be ars*d.

I don't know how fit he actually is, but I do know that he returning from injury and all players take time to regain match fitness and playing sharpness after a long injury, so its best to trust Coppell. Oster would have been the best choice at Old Trafford and he will certainly be best choice for Wednesday night!

Not completely true, Seol gets treatment that the odd Reading player has gotten throughout the years. Fans are almost waiting for the first mistake to get on his back. Oster often gets the same treatment.

Whereas apparent favourites can make the exact same mistake and it's not even noted by the majority.

rabidbee What's the point? I've already written about the positive contributions of Seol today on a different thread. It's overlooked, it was overlooked last year, it will continue to be overlooked this year, and it is clearly Seol's fault that Coppell is incapable of seeing how bad a player he is. (Ffs, blame Coppell, not Seol!)

Funny how much more involved in United attacks Wes Brown (marker: Stephen Hunt) was than Mickael Silvestre ("marker": Seol... or possibly Seal...).

The wide angle picture illustrates perfectly how ridiulous it is to compare Seol's contribution favourably with that of the ever energetic and selfless Hunt.

I must have taken this pic about a split second in difference to the pic on the BBC Sport website.
You can see the BBC photographer who took that shot in my pic.

I think I remember that. IIRC, Hunt was there because he had tracked back with Brown, who had got the ball across to Rooney. Silvestre, on the other hand, is still in his own half. Now, either Seol is still up the pitch because that is where "his" man is, or Silvestre is still up the pitch because of the threat of Seol; either way, I suspect that this was the job that Coppell set out for him.

As for other people's comments about not beating players, both Seol and Hunt were often faced with two United players, and little or no support, because we were not streaming forward in support. No wonder they were easily picked off. It didn't then help that the entire team were sloppy in possession.

Of course......

Its to do with consistency.....

Someone like Shorey works very hard every game..... he rarely makes mistakes but when he does, it can be forgiven because its a rarity.

Someone like Seol is consistently not trying hard most games..... There is only so much lack of effort people can tolerate.

Hughes consistently delivered poor passes and made bad crosses. People get fed up!

If Hunt had one game where he didn't try, he would be forgiven because 99% of the time he works his ars* into the ground for the team.

Favourites are favourites because they are consistently good.

Seol is getting on everyone's tits because he is rarely good. He consistently doesn't try. This annoys people.........

Every fan has a different level of tolerance. Seol has already overstepped the mark with alot of fans.

Some fans tolerance have been severly tested and some other fans have a longer fuse and can tolerate a few more indifferent performances by Seol before they get annoyed.

But the most successful people have a low tolerance of abject performance and lack of desire........ Successful people don't take fools gladly!

Fergie won't tolerate a poor performance for 5 minutes......... The player would be out.

Keane would get shot of poor performers rapidly. Thats why these people are successful.

You can be pretty sure that Coppell isn't happy with Seol either. If he had other options Seol would have been long gone by now!

I've come to realise that this wouldn't work for Seol......

The cultural differences between English culture and South Korean culture mean that Seol gets offended by this.

An English person would more likely take it on the chin and want to prove the doubters wrong.

A South Korean person such as Seol has too much pride, loves himself too much! Knows that he is a god in South Korea and gets completely offended by booing tactics!

The suggested motivational technique would be to put your arms round Seol. Tell him what a great player he is. What a great person he is. Tell him how much we love him. How much we respect him and how important he is to us. We need to tell him that we would be nothing without him and that he carries us forward on his shoulders with his strength.

We need to give him his pride back!
