papereyes
johnnym never a red imho

i recall pre-season jeff winter remarking that prem league refs were going to clamp down hard on two footed challenges, which that was. so not a surprise to see the red, but no way deserving of it.

dems da breaks....we still got a VERY valuable pont.

Chelsea look very very frail at the back, I hope and am sure we will play 2 up against them.

URZ

Was also in the Observer in an interview with the head ref.

So maybe that was them showing that they are clamping down on it?

Hold on - if that's a red for a two-footed challenge then it must be rescinded immediately - IT WAS NOT.

I believe it was more in the wreckless challenges as a whole, rather than specifics of whether a player injures someone with one leg or both

I'll have to dig out the paper, but reading it after the event, it gave some insight as to the decision. Certainly was aimed at that type of tackle.

I still think a yellow, and a decent talking to, would be a better punishment. But, then again, I'm not a ref.

The Royals will not be appealing against Dave Kitson's sending off at Manchester United yesterday.

Says the OS.

Given that there would be no basis for appealing that hardly needs an OS statement !!!

Well, here it is

[quote]It was not how Dave Kitson expected the new season to begin. The articulate and thoughtful Reading forward avoids publicity, but within 37 seconds of his introduction as a 72nd-minute substitute at Old Trafford yesterday, he was thrust into the spotlight. A wild challenge on Patrice Evra, the defender, in the goalless draw against Man-hester United at Old Trafford, earned him a red card and a confrontation with Ruud Gullit after the match.

Kitson was shocked by the incident. “I’d implore Rob Styles [the referee] to have a second look. I was trying so desperately to stop him [Evra] clearing the ball. Sometimes you’re successful, sometimes you miss. It’s a yellow card, but a straight red . . . I’m lost for words.â€

probably due to the fact that evra says he should have got a red.

i didn't think it was worth a red and if 2 old pros like alan shearer and lee dixon think it was definitely just a booking and don't give it a second thought then that's good enough for me.

for those who didn't see match of the day they were even joking that shearer had probably done the same thing to dixon a few times

so thanks patrice evra and ruud gullit for sticking your oars in, but kindly shut up about it

meanwhile i eagerly anticipate kitson's return and reading's march up the table (starting with a scrappy one nil win against chelsea on wednesday)

Having spoken to a Championship linesman this morning he said that a tackle like that will get a red every time from now on. He attended a seminar of Premier League & football league officials a couple of weeks back and one of the major things they are clamping down on this season is dangerous tackles. It is now seen that if your foot is off the ground in the way Kitson's was then you are not fully in control of yourself and if you make contact then you are off.

i was unaware of this myself and clearly the match of the day team were as well, perhaps the message hasn't reached players and staff at the clubs either...

if that sort of challenge will get a red every time then kitson will get a red every other game

The knowledge of the rules displayed by old pros turned pundits is often shocking, so it's no surprise that the MotD crew were unaware of the new ruling.

(Off-topic, but the one that always sticks in my mind was a Goals On Sunday piece with Kamara and a couple of current pros talking about a penalty that had to be retaken because the keeper had come off his line and saved it. Kamara's comment was something along the lines of 'So what if it was scored? Surely it would have had to be retaken in that case as well, as the keeper had come off his line.')

That's fair enough, if it does actually happen. Consistency is all I ask for.

The thing about the foot being off the ground though, I don't agree with that. Evra was clearing a ball that was bouncing. I take it that Kitson is still allowed to make an attempt to block the ball? If the ball is in the air, then Kitson is going to have to block it at that height. There's little point in sliding in along the ground, if the ball is a foot above it.

Oster's foot was off the ground for the freekick in the 94th minute. Was that considered to be 'controlled' and therefore not a red (or even a yellow ?).
Did your contact comment on whether raising hands is still considered an automatic red and if so on what basis Vidic was not sent off for his lunge at Ivar (or Duberry or whoever it was !)

I also thought they were clamping down on dives in the box trying to get penalties. Shouldn't Rooney have been booked in that case?

If it was Say Giggs on Shorey I would put money on it that the most that would have been awarded was a freekick and a yellow.

But thats what its like against the top 4

Skyline Be honest, if that had been Evra against Kitson at the Mad Stad you'd all have been baying for blood.

Spot on.

It was a very bad challenge. A borderline red, but I wasn't at all surprised when it was shown.

If it had been Evra against Kitson then no way on God's green Earth would Evra have been sent off.

That's what irritates me, and is probably the main difference I noted last season between the football league and the premier league. It's just not a level playing field in that respect.

This is where I stand, too.

And, whilst I agree it probably was borderline red, there was nothing borderline about the challenge that put Kitson out for most of last season which surprise, surprise!! didn't get the same punishment

Just like West Ham can break the rules, lie about it, and still not get relegated, us and the likes of Wigan would have been down months ago if it meant saving the neck of one of the big boys.

Anyone who thinks a Man U player would have walked at OT in the same circumstances is in dire need of a reality check.

But, it didn't work, we still got our brilliantly deserved point and I'm happy that Shane Long will revel in this unexexpected opporunity :P

Big leap to suggest it'll be 4-4-2 on Weds. I expect a slightly more attacking version of Sunday with a man pushing on from midfield.

Long may well get a chance off the bench for 20/30 mins.

Remember Kitson's tackle on Upson?

Dave does it all the time. Some times in gets the ball, sometimes he gets the man. This time his foot was too high.

Just let the ball go Dave, it's far enough from the goal after all...........usually!

Whilst I'm hopeful that Coppell might go 4-4-2 at home to a vulnerble looking Chelsea, I'm also assuming Kitson will get more than a one game ban.
