BBC Berks Text Service

by Geekins » 22 Aug 2007 10:15

Hi, Is the text messaging service a standard rate charge, e.g same price as texting your friends mobile. Its just that i'm sure people would text you a lot more if they knew. Plus i get free texts!

Good question... maybe you should add it to the questions for Nicky Hammond thread, not that he'd know, but they might ask it.

12:05pm: I am reliably informed that the standard charge for texting any BBC local radio station is 25p plus your usual network charge.

Edit at 3:15pm: The person by whom I was reliably informed has reliably informed me they were not reliably informed.

Your texts to our shows are charged at normal network rates.

Here is the relevant section of the BBC's Editorial Guidelines.

Viewers and listeners may wish to contribute comments and opinions to programmes via SMS/text messaging. Their text messages may be read out on air or posted on BBCi. The audience may text in questions, which could be put to a studio guest.

Charges

If programmes ask viewers and listeners to comment via a long code number then calls will normally be charged at the user's normal network rate.

I think the 25p charge applies to certain competitions using certain phone lines but, to re-iterate, does NOT apply to our normal 07786 202 303 number. Apologies for the confusion.

Can BBC Berks not just buy a PAYG mobile and get us to text to that instead?

It's worth repeating that that's only what I'm told. I've no idea who will be the oracle on these matters since all the BBC local radio numbers come under the same bracket, but I'll do some research and make absolutely sure of the cost.

Edit: It is, of course, free to leave questions for Nicky Hammond on here.

See my first reply on this thread for the actual cost of your texts: it is network charge only, not 25p plus network - which is reserved for some BBC competitions, none of which are running anyway since the corporation has suspended all of them for the time being.

So basically if you get free texts, then its free! You'll get more text from me about the players. Not that i spend all my time texting you guys, only done it once! I can't get BBC Berks where i live anyway unless i drive to the top of a hill, and face away from the scenery! Was worth it sometimes!

Just wait 'til the watchdog discovers the 'phone-in' questions are actually submitted in advance via some obscure website. It'll be like Blue Peter all over again I tell thee.

If the Beeb do reintroduce these competitions and BBC Berks run one, feel free to select me as the winner if the phones go down... I promise to play along and keep it to myself, it won't get out like the Blue Peter scandal.
