A quote from Curbs when asked about buying a left back.

"It gets very difficult over the last 10 days to do business with another club unless they have a replacement lined up."

He's obviously talking about NS as like I said a fee was agreed and he was then told they'd have to replace him first.

So they suddenly realised they didn't have a replacement for him and decided not to sell him? Do me a favour. I don't doubt that WH are interested and may even have made a bid, but I strongly doubt we ever agreed a fee.

Exactly that, ridiculous but true. Reading wanted £8million we offered £5million a compromise was reached.

18/8/2007 readingfc.co.uk Steve Coppell

The boss has dismissed reports of any contact regarding Nicky Shorey though, saying simply 'We've had no approach, none at all'.

Not sure which has more credibility really.

What are they going to say?

We accepted a bid from West Ham for Shorey and he wanted to go but then

A) We changed our minds
B) The player we were going to replace him with fell through
C) We reneged and we're going to hold out for the £8million we wanted

Surely the truth would make his position untenable, maybe as it looks like this wont happen now there was no point in releasing it.

I suppose the only way it will come out is if something changes in the next week.

It's Friday night here, so I'm going to kick back and chill, have good weekend, I think youll pick up 3 points at the whippet botherers.

Well at a pinch we could have said 'we've had a bid but it's not acceptable'

Bear in mind we had the same situation with another player. Club said we had a bid, wouldn't divulge who and have since said that we've accepted it but it's up to the player.

Have to laugh at you thinking that anything could make Coppell's position untenable by the way !! I bet West Ham would kill for a manager like Coppell (probably literally given the ethical standards at the club !)

The full quote, from Curbs' press conference today, is actually as follows, and is presumably in reference to Shorey.

"It gets very difficult over the last 10 days to do business with another club unless they have a replacement lined up.

“As it gets nearer the last day, the more difficult it becomes. We’ll have to see. Like most clubs, we are looking around and enquiring but I don’t think people are getting anywhere.

“And I’m very happy with George McCartney. We also have Jonathan Spector, and Lucas Neill can play there, so we have that position quite covered.â€

I meant Shorey's position being untenable with the fans because he wants to join West Ham, which he does.

Which your second or third hand sources are telling you he does....

Any thoughts as to why RFC would not simply say a bid had been received and rejected ? No impact on Shorey at all.

The whole scenario still seems totally implausible, tinged with the usual WHU arrogance (how dare we 'renege' on a deal that hadn't happened and how dare we be 'difficult' over a deal we aren,t interested in and how dare we not sell a player at less than his value !)
