Players rarely ask to be transfer listed as this usually means giving up the right to any outstanding bonuses/signing on fees owed to them.

It's not hard to work out the maths though....

Any outstanding bonuses will be minimal at the start of a season, unless there are 'loyalty' payments, which a player deserves to lose if they try to force a move.

If West Ham are (say) doubling the wages of a player he woul dneed to be on one hell of a bonus to make it worth missing out on the move,

Signing on fees would be paid by the club who are signing the player, not the club he is leaving.

The point was that Me seemed so certain Shorey was suicidal at the propespect of not joiningthe WHU gravy train, Coppell has said that any player who wants to go just needs to say so yet the silence is deafening. Economically it makes no sense for a player NOT to ask for a move when it would be to a club that chucks money around like they print it....

Signing on fees and loyalty bonuses may still apply to Shorey. Don't forget he signed a new contract last season and it could be that the signing on fee's for that are staggered depending on length of service etc.

Basically it's impossible for us to second guess the clauses, add ons and bits and pieces of contracts for individual players because they are so complicated and I'd suspect individual.

It's true that you very rarely get players handing in transfer requests these days, and the general consensus is that it's for financial reasons. If Joey Barton can be owed £300k from Man City in outstanding bonuses then I'm sure Shorey could be in a similar situation.

Even if the new salary far outweighs the outstanding payments I can't see a player or an agent just dismissing them for the sake of handing in a transfer request over sitting tight and letting the press do it for them.

Agree with much of that, although the complicating factor here is time.

If Shorey wanted to go, and stood to make huge sums (£300k is less than the increased wages he'd get between now and Xmas) but the club aren;t willing then he would need to force their hand. There is no saying that he'd still be on the shopping list of a club come January so if he sat tight and hoped it could be a costly mistake.

An approach has been made but we've said we're not selling...

They "understand". Still no official confirmation from either club that a bid has been made and rejected.

Exactly, looks like another recycled story.

No it doesn't. At least one of the clubs has now confirmed off the record that a bid has been made. That's a change and it's what they mean when they say "understands". I suspect its us, given the fact that our rejection came out so soon afterwards.

But that's by-the-by. I would be bloody annoyed if we sell at this stage - or at least if we sell for less than 10m.

Signing on fees are usually paid over the course of the players contract, so if Shorey has two years to run on his deal, its very likely that asking for a transfer could cost him quite a bit of money.

But not as much as any fee paid by WHU. If he's that desperate to go then he'll be looking to make sacrifices. If hanging on for a few quid (that he won;t deserve anyway) is more important then he's hardly 'desperate' to join WHU as has been suggested.

If he's leaving he'll have been told he can go by now and that the club are just waiting on the best offer before deadline day and if they have cover until January.

We are also feeding him pies to ensure his pace is lost

Coppell in todays EP

" we have had a bid, it was not a derisory offer but an offer we are going absolutely nowhere near.

we are not continuing any dialogue about him with West Ham or anybody else but we are endeavouring to continue contract negotiations with Shorey."

I was told last night that we might accept a £6m + player bid for Shorey, but he will sign Friday evening after 5pm so he can't play Saturday against us. This could be all be crap, but the most worrying aspect was Shorey has apparently begged Coppell to sell him to West Ham.
