Kitson for England

by Victor Meldrew » 30 Sep 2007 17:54

Through the gloom of the past few weeks has emerged the player that we knew was class in The Championship but had not been fit enough to show how good he could be in The Premiership.
Against the likes of Campbell and Distin he stood up strong and competed and his finish showed the calm and awareness of a potential International player.
With names like Bent,Heskey,Crouch,Ashton and Johnson being bandied around as possible front men for England how long before The Press put forward our man?

In my eyes he has much more about him than the U21 strikers of last season,Lita and Nugent and personally I see only Owen and Rooney as automatic selections and with Heskey injured (and Owen doubtful) who would you pick as the big man to play in a big man/little man combination?
Our man is genuinely two-footed,is strong in the air and has (as they say) a good touch for a big man.

We eventually got Nicky Shorey there so how about "Kitson for England" to show that he has moved on from being just a bargain and only fully appreciated in Berkshire?

Theres more chance of Lita atm just for the fact he has a bigger reputation around the country becausew of the U21's.

It will take at least a season and 15 goals for Kits to be considered for the England Squad.

Not many English strikers could have finished like he did against Pompey.

although i'd love to see Kitson playing for England, he's already said he's not interested. But yes, he would a quality player for England and he'd do us Royals very proud (well he'd do me proud, don't know about the rest of the nobbers). Another thing, if Pearce (U21 manager) had picked him for the U21 WCup, perhaps McClaren would've taken notice but until Kitson is hitting the net (back of it, not side netting) and getting around 20 goals, he's got no chance in heaven. Would love to see another Royal in the England team.

In pre-season, he looked our best player by miles. He's been my favourite Reading player for a long time, he has the kind of creative spark and natural skill that nobody in the squad bar Little and Convey can offer us. He is also a 100%er, and there are few things better as a fan than to see Kitson making a crunching tackle to win the ball in midfield, then calmly distribute the ball to a team-mate. Great player.

No matter what a player says if your country come calling you would jump at the chance to play for them. Ashton i feel will get the nod though for the upcoming qualifiers

But there are plenty of little players-Rooney,Owen,Defoe,Johnson,Bent,Lita,Nugent,Derbyshire but the archetypal English centre forward no longer seems to be around and if they are (in the lower divisions) they tend to be battering rams with very little skill.

to some people, a battering ram player is a skilfull but for me that player is unattractive (memories of a certain Keith Scott). i do wish MCclaren would choose Kitson ahead of Ashton, but can't see it anywhere. Was kitson quoted as saying he'd rather not play for the ROI team. Could be he's waiting for the England jersey. Possiblities are still there.

He said he isn't interested in playing for Republic of Ireland. And the reason he wasn't selected for the Under 21 WC is because he is 27...

The last thing we want is Kitson to play for England and then refuse to sign a contract renewal because he suddenly thinks he's too big for little Reading ....

Go back in time a couple of years and you'd find exactly the same reaction to the early "Shorey for England" threads.

Kitson said he was not interested in playing for Ireland as he sees himself as english no matter what relatives are Irish. He said he wasn't good enough to ply for England.

If Kitson gets a few seasons in the Premiership then he might get international recognition - but that is not going to happen I am afraid.

What a shame that such smug negativity is appearing more and more on this board after our poor start to the season.
