Any Ex RFC players that went on to play in European matches?

by readingbedding » 03 Oct 2007 22:27

By that I mean UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cup, European Cup/Champions League.

Seeing as Sidwell played his 1st match in the CL this evening, and I guess Neil Webb and maybe Shaka in the UEFA/Cup Winners Cup, are there any more ex players that went on to play in European club competitions?

Ther'll be quite a few if they can have played in Europe before they got to us - Dariusz Wdowczyk, for instance?

And also Nick Colgan - a couple of UEFA Cup games for Hibs in 2001.

And Archie played twice for Livingstone in 2002.

Yeah, Doyle, Cisse, Bikey, Steve Archibald, Jim Leighton, Mark McGhee etc etc.

I think Sidwell must be the first ex RFC player to leave and play in UEFA's elite European club competition.

Yeah you're right, he must have been in goal when Asprilla scored a hat-trick against Barcelona in the CL for Newcastle.
Certainly in that campaign he must have played.

Not sure about the Barca match, think that could have been Srnicek, but he played later that season:

Blimey, good win as well, Kiev were a good side back then.
Mind you, so was Newcastle.

Yep - 2 matches.

Barca away (1-0 loss) and Kiev at home (2-0 win).

I reckon Steve Morrow must have played for Arse in Europe after playing for us.

Not sure I can be bothered to track it down though after that google marathon trying to find Newcastle line-ups from 1997.

Not bad. A bit off the pace though.

Bit of a random one but Alan Maybury was on loan to us and also played for Leeds in the Champions League at some point afterwards. Rubbish player.

You're right - 1 CL match v Lazio (3-3) draw - and he also played 10 UEFA Cup games for Hearts.

I'm looking forward to the day that our players play in Europe whilst with Reading FC. And when players join Reading so that they can play in European competition. That day is just around the corner!
