Very sad news.

Kepa Blanco said this morning that Puerta's health problems were already known by the club and others within the game, he apparently had a seuizure a year earlier in a friendly.

If that's the case, how on earth could they have allowed him to continue playing??

Very sad news. Looked as though he'd be ok at first the way he left the field on his own steam. :(

A damn shame.

As to why he was allowed to continue playing...this isn't an unprecedented thing, and I don't want to seem ghoulish here, but I really don't have a problem with it so long as he was getting the best medical evaluation, care and advice during the time leading up to this, and I trust that he was.

If so, then it's obvious that the young man had an informed decision to make, and I really don't think it right to deny him a living playing football if he's otherwise good enough and makes absolutely clear his desire to continue to do so in spite of the risk.

Of course, the fact that he just as well might have died in his sleep instead doesn't make it any less sad or easier to watch.

Can I make this story worse by saying that his wife is expecting their first child

Doctors confirm that Puerta's collapse was precipitated by a weakness in the right ventricle of the player's heart that can cause arrhythmias.

Sevilla confirm that the player had fainted on two previous occasions though they say that the problem was extremely difficult to detect and was unlikely to show up in medical tests.

Milan, after drawing with Catania at home, now sitting eleventh in Serie A on 7 points, level with Lazio and Cagliari and ahead of both on GD.

Sevilla lost again yesterday, this time away to Zaragoza. They're thirteenth in La Liga on 6 points with a game in hand (Osasuna away). Henry a natural hat-trick for Barca on Saturday.

Bayern yet to lose in the Bundesliga; Ajax top of the Eredivisie a point better than Feyenoord, themselves a point in front of PSV.

Chris Coleman's Real Sociedad could be in 4th place by this evening if they beat bottom of the table Albacete at home

Antonio Puerta's girlfriend gives birth to their son, Aitor Antonio. Sevilla have given the newborn a lifetime season ticket and have also said that he will be allowed to wear Puerta's retired number 16 shirt should he ever make it as a professonal with them. Following an inquest into Puerta's death 3 doctors have been suspended.

Yeah, but more impressive is the fact that Sheff Wed flop Gerald Sibon scored twice!!!

Can't see Afonso Alves staying at Heerenveen much longer - wasn't he top scorer in Holland last year as well - maybe Coppell will be tempted?!

Sogs, did you ever forsee the day when you'd sell out and actually post for other people and not to ridicule them?

I prefered you of old.

Interesting to see Van Nistelrooy had no trouble adapting to Spanish football while Henry is making the usual excuses about settling in.

Van Nistelrooy with his 39th goal in 55 appearances for Real Madrid.

Hasn't stopped Henry scoring a hat-trick, albeit against Levante (ironically Van Nistelrooy's first La Liga hat-trick was also against Levante). 5 goals and 3 assists in total, in 12 games, which is hardly horrific.

In fairness Van N'Horse has had enough time to adapt while Henry has only been playing there for about 2 months. Fair play to Van N'Horse though, he looked good at Man Utd but he has stepped up a whole host of gears since joining Real Madrid, he has been a revelation in Spain.

True, joining the biggest and best club team in the World has really made Van Nistelrooy step it up another level.

Wenger is very good at releasing great players when they have passed their best for Arsenal, Henry did have a bit of trouble adapting to the British game, but then managed to score 226 goals for Arsenal - which is pretty handy.

Numerous reports in Holland now stating that Manchester City have reached an agreement with Heerenveen to sign Alves for €20M in January.
