It seems American billionaires are crawling all over the place at the moment.

JM must be wetting himself, jumping up and down, shouting "Ooh Ooh Pick me!"

mikey0406 there was an American Business man on SSN today who was mega rich and claimed he was in the process of buying an unnamed premiership team which had good prospects. he would not let anything slip on the team but did say it had nothing to do with the 9 premeirship clubs owned in foriegn hands. so that only leaves 11, of whom....

Newcastle wouldnt sell up as MIke Ashley is having too much fun
Wigan wouldnt sell up
Derby are shite
Boro chairman wouldnt let go
Not rich enough for Arsenal's pockets

so in all good prospects, im hoping its the same guy already mentioned within this forum

Different bloke. Maybe one of the other bidders.

Owner of NEw England Patriots - Coppells favourite american football team. Perhaps SC could manage both!

Broxroyal Fulham is already in foreign hands of course.

As are Spurs aren;t they ?

Someone said Wigan wouldn;t sell - which is clearly wrong. Whelan has already flogged off the RL franchise and has said before that he had been considering getting out of the football. Mind you I'm not sure an American would find it an especially attractive club to buy !

The article specifies a London club..

Arsenal, Chelsea, WHU, Spurs are well and truly tied up.

Fulham - a possibilty - but the infrastructure isn't great and they have a small fanbase and are in competition with QPR, Chelsea & Brentford for support, so I'd say that would be a non starter.

Reading as we know isn't in London, but given we're just 20 minutes down the M4 --- well who knows..A distinct possibilty..

The guy is loaded too..Forbes has him down as the 297th richest American , with a Net Worth of $1.3 billion - Probably fits the bill as far as JM is concerned...

As far as an American is concerned we would be a London club. This isn;t to insult the intelligence of Americans - but the distance is so short as to be immaterial and it's probably quicker to get from LHR to Reading than to almost any London Prem ground.

I've wondered how attractive we are as an investment. It's been the 'bigger' clubs generally that have been the targets and as it stands the potential for boosting revenues at Reading is limited. There isn't the potential for adding extra revenue earning facilities (we have them already) so it would be interesting to see from a commercial point of view how a buyer would see us as an investment, and what the 'value' of the club is seen to be.

By my calculations, and also those of a journo I was talking to ot this subject, we would be worth somewhere between £110 M and £125 M.

And what would be included in that ?

Hotel ?
Ground ?
Freehold of the land ?
Training ground ?

Always intregued as to how you value the ground.

In many ways it is valueless - there is no (AFAIK) ready market for second hand sports stadia !

The land also has no value for alternative usage.

It's only of valyue to whoever owns the team, and to them it is priceless as without it they have no viable business.

In some ways it's replacement value, but in our case there is always a revene stream with the hotel and conference centre, as well as the rugby rental.

It's also a big space with scope for additional development, so there's additional value in that.

Would the hotel be included, though. Isn't it part of the Millenium hotels chain - or is that just a franchise?

It's a franchise - they get to run it for x years.

Same with the Conference Centre which is run by a third party on a contract basis.

Reading FC:
Philip Anschutz's revised offer has been accepted by Chairman John Madejski. He is now undertaking due diligence. No other bids have been received.

Disagree about potentially better revenue streams. - We have a stadium expansion that his approved and ready to go. That in itself once complete gives the club approx 40% increase in potential ticket sales week in week out, & we have the globalisation of sport in general on the horizon as the NFL has shown us only this weekend. For an American investor not only is the US market a massive opportunity, but so is China & India, once they fully open up to the rest of the world.

Extending the stadium doesn't give us new revenue streams though, it just expands an existing revenue stream. New revenue streams would be things like hotels (which we already have, and business centres (which we have). I would like to see us expanding our leisure facilities so the site is used as much as possible but there isn;t room.

I'm not convinced the globalisation issue will affect us. Maybe the Big 4 can make money globally but I really don;t think there are millions to be made flogging Royals shirts to the Chinese...

Thought you said 'potential for adding extra revenue earning facilities' - stadium expansion is exactly that -

Significant investment in anything is very rarely based on what we know now, its more generally based on assumed potential - thats why we have so many non supporting foreigners owning English Football teams. They're hedging large cash outlays vs. potential growth.

Randy Lerner is not a Villa fan. But he understands the potential that Aston Villa may have in the Global football market - for the future.

It may not be in the next 5 years, but the global brand for all EPL teams is a reality that people who have more savvy than me, are looking to invest in.
