1960 As starter of this thread I would like to say I meant no disrespect to Hunt at all. He stepped up, was unfazed and scored neatly. My point was that Doyle or Kitson usually take them and I just wondered why one of them didn't take it. Now answered.

TBH I was wondering at the time too, but don't give a fcuk now.

Hunt's a penalty specialist, Doyle challenged him but I was glad Hunt held on to the ball.

Agreed that Hunt should take them until he misses. So far we have had misses from both Doyle and Shorey this season. Stick with what works. (Until it doesn't)

Reina has an awesome record of saving penalties and would have looked at where both Doyle and Kitson favour placing them the week before the game..... i bet when Hunt stepped up he never had a clue as to his favoured side.

Might have been said in previous posts, but that was an excellent lesson in how to take a penalty.

Watch it again and watch Hunt's body language - shapes to hit it to his right, Reina dives that way and Hunt strokes it to the left.

Brilliant.

purleyroyal With Hunt's kick neither criticism could be levelled at us.
I presume that's not naivity on our behalf.
(NB that's not a mis-spelling of nativity - that comes later this month  )

Why would you want to mis-spell nativity ?

He definitely wouldn't have been my first choice - but you can't argue with success!

Y21_Royal Don't Reading have the policy of, whoever calls it, takes it? He tried to take the last one IIRC.

Not the worlds greatest penalty but a darn sight better than our previous efforts!

Can someone tell me please, whats wrong with whacking penalties? You're much more likely to score if you whack it

you're also much more likely to miss the target if you whack it.

When was the last time you saw someone whack it over the bar? A good player should be able to keep it down ala Gareth Barry yesterday. So many weak penalties 'placed' in the corner get saved, a higher percentage anyway, just look at Alan Lee's for Ipswich yesterday or virtually any Reading penalty of the last two years. I don't recall Trevor Morley missing too many
Check out Anelka's effort over the weekend - I don't think it's come down yet.

Surely it was equal #1 in the list of all time greatest penalties?

facaldaqui If it is true that there is no official penalty taker, then I am horrified. In my opinion, the penalty taker should be known beforehand and should not change except for injury, at which point the designated deputy should take it. This should apply in all curcumstances, even if someone is on a hat trick or we are winning six nil.

I agree in most cases, but if the designated penalty taker is having a stinker, carrying a knock and/or is low on confidence etc it's not a good idea to make them take a penalty they're not that confident on.

It does seem a bit daft not to have some sort of pecking order for penalties within the club though. Some players are better at them than others. If I were a manager I'd want my best penalty taker know that it's his if he wants it.

As for who should be our penalty taker, I guess it's not helped by the fact so many of ours seem so keen on missing them. Kitson's alwys looked pretty comfortable with the responsibility, Shorey should be up there with his excellent left foot and I remember seeing videos of Doyle take them well with Cork when we signed him. Add in Hunt and mr 100% record Murty and you wouldn't expect us to have such a poor recent record.

Perhaps Coppell's love child will have the job until he misses now.

Hunty's always wanted to take them - in previous matches he's always been first to the ball and usually has it taken away from him.

It was funny. There was a gasp from every1 around me when Hunt put the ball on the spot, but he put the ball away well. Stick with him until he misses I say.

Doyle is not the best from Penalties. I think Kits would be the best taking them like Sir Jimmy Quinn use to.

Check the record - Kits missed 3 out of the last 5 (or possibly 4). My fav player but let Hunty take them in future until his record goes downhill (misses 2 on trot or 3 out of 5, etc).
