Royals net Nwoko

28/12/2007

Reading boss Steve Coppell is set to make his first deal of the January transfer window by signing Nigerian striker Udo Nwoko.

Nwoko, 23, has agreed to join the Royals after undergoing a medical and Coppell (left) is close to agreeing a £1.25million fee with Portuguese club Leixoes.

Coppell is bracing himself for moves for leftback Nicky Shorey and winger Stephen Hunt, who is wanted by Everton, and Nwoko is being signed to boost his attacking options.

Nwoko said: "I hope the deal can be completed as Reading is a sensational club who would make me very welcome."

Not sure a striker is top of our list...

I think he's more of an attacking midfielder than an out-and-out striker.

Bairns in Nwoko talks
Tuesday Jul 25 2006 16:40

Falkirk are close to agreeing a deal to sign midfielder Udo Nwoko from Maltese side FC Hibernian.
The Nigerian recently linked-up with the Bairns for a trial spell and impressed manager John Hughes with his displays during the pre-season tour to the Netherlands.

Falkirk are close to agreeing a deal to sign midfielder Udo Nwoko from Maltese side FC Hibernian.
Hughes is now keen to snap-up Nwoko and has opened talks with his agent, Massimo Franchie.

"We are still in negotiations," Franchie told the Daily Record.

"It's more of the final pieces of the transfer with stuff such as compensation to be sorted out as his personal terms won't be a problem."

______________

But then The Scotsman - same month

....But the two Nigerians that John Hughes was so keen to keep undercover in case anyone tried to nip in and sign them have been sent home to their clubs in Malta. Not good enough it turns out. So the subterfuge was a good idea. Oh they’re called Udo Nwoko and Anizoba Chizoba in case you were wondering.

This is the sort of big signing we were always going to see with this warchest of ours.

I can't contain myself.

I always welcome new signings. But IF this is true I find it strange. A player who has never played in the prem (considering the probs we have had with players adapting I didnt think we would go down this route again.)

IMO we wont be getting rid of Lita, so I cant see us signing another attacker.

Thats why I think this is tabloid rubbish or a strange signing.

After the money wasted on Fae.

I can't imagine us buying from abroad in Jan.

We need players to come in and improve what we have.

Here's what good old wikipedia has to say about him....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udo_Nwoko

Udochukwu Nwoko (born October 15, 1984 in Nigeria) is a Maltese professional footballer currently playing for
Leixões S.C. in Portugal. Before he played for Malta 2006-2007 champions Marsaxlokk F.C., Mosta F.C.,
Xewkija Tigers F.C. and Hibernians F.C. who brought him up since he was 14. His move to Malta was the first step in a
journey he hoped would lead him all the way to one of the top leagues in Europe.

The small but agile attacker, can also play just behind the strikers. Is not an out and out goalscorer but prefers providing
the final pass to attackers and keeping possession whilst giving the rest of the team the chance to join the attack.

He is married to a Maltese woman, he obtained Maltese Citizenship in August and therefore became eligible to play
for the Malta national football team. He began playing for Malta on October 13, 2007 when he made his first debut
against Hungary.

"He's our Maltese international,
He's our Maltese international,
He's our Maltese international,
.....Udochukwu Nwoko"

I fail to believe we would be paying £1.25m for a player who has played most of his career in Malta, however it's one of those rumours that seems far too obscure to be made up. :? :?

I'd prefer

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will add Sheffield United's Rob Hulse to his squad for around £2.2m (Daily Mirror)

How do we know this is a bad signing, its not like if he turns out to be a flop we have no one else to cover for the front 2. Might even be another little mastermind of a singing.

As someone else put it, this type of singing wouldn't raise an eyebrow at rushden and diamonds. So poor it can't be true.

Hunt - not good enough for Brentford.
Doyle - Cork City on a par with Maltese sides I'd venture.
Long - See above only not as well rated as Doyle.

I personally prefer these sort of rumours with Coppell's track record.
