DG I think we are broadly in agreement then, but it's interesting that "spontaenity" is used cynically by advertisers to make comsumers think and feel that they are making their own choices. I would not advocate any compulsion, but a nudge in the right direction, ie tunes being suggeted by fans and played on the pa by the club. This is a tradition that has fallen away somewhat and now a few faceless individuals are selecting "Carmin Burana" et al on our behalf. The romantic view of how Stoke adopted "Delilah" is basically true, but it was also cultivated and nurtured by the supporters club too. "Sweet Caroline" is a good shout, but as you say these things seem to fly or crash and burn with precious little in between. I guess something will just "make it" one day. Sad thing is that some people fail to recognize that an "anthem" like a uniform or a cause helps to unite people in common belief and is therefore more important than may be generally realised.

I was also telling a friend the other day at work about the 'Tracksuits from Matalan' chant that was on a Royals match I watched on the telly some time ago although possibly against Liverpool last season. The kind of simple effectiveness needed, but not meaty enough for a weekly chant, but it's the kind of thing to build on.

I think you'll find it started with inmates of the local prison singing it out of their cells, that's where it caught on from.

And that, I'm afraid, is the only way it will work these days. Spontaneous, or not at all. Anyone who tries to organise anything will get derided for it, and many people will resists any such new idea precisely because it is something that they personally weren't involved in choosing.

That's the reality, I'm afraid - but you're definitely right that a song needs to catch a mood. I thought we nearly had it with "Sweet Caroline" - which to me still captures the mood of that glorious last month in the Championship season, but it was never really persevered with, and, of course, for everyone who liked it someone else hated it just as violently.

Many United chants were created and printed in Red Issue (mainly by Boyle) from there they were sung first in pubs and then at away games before catching on with the home crowds.

Exactly.

United use a lot of irony which makes it harder to sing in opposition to them, such as "who the fukc are man utd".

Therefore, "We've never won fukc all" is perfect for pi55ing on their fire before they get the chance.

In hindsight, when united sang "We've got one stand bigger than your ground", then "Big ground for a funeral" - to quote fergie - would have been a good reply. Would make sense to plan the songs beforehand. As you say, simple ones are more likely to catch on.

Yeah, that sounded really great when they did it, though in fairness, was there was twice as many of them as there usually would be, so perhaps it sounded better because of the volume? Either way, it did have a nice ring to it. Didn't United fans sing it too, at one point? Would be a good one to be getting on with, at any rate.
