I'm really not sure what midfield two we should play now.

Marek and Harps is our best on paper, but lacks bite.

Marek and Bryn lacks pace.

Bryn and Harps lacks quality.

No idea what we should go with.

Marek and Hunty? Hunty wouldn't be as good playing a disciplined centre mid role as he is out wide.

Coppelled Streets Doyle's hair looked nice.

I could only recognise him by his distinctive calf musculature.

I didn't think we'd miss Sidwell when he left, but I was wrong about this. (Btw, at 5ft 10, I wouldn't say he was tall, whoever said he was.) His presence in front of the Reading defence helped to make us solid (yes, he was sometimes end to end, but I think even he would admit, his shooting was rarely on target). Having said that though, I really don't think the problem lies with the players or lack of them - it runs much deeper and it's almost instutional now.
(I don't come on this website very much, so apologies if these are all points that have been made before).

I think the way Lita and Cox (and a fair few others) have been treated by the management is indicative of what's wrong with the club. This time last year, we had Leroy Lita scoring 10 goals in 11 games or whatever it was and getting noticed by the England U-21 manager. In fact, Harewood's finish today was very reminiscent of Lita's second goal at Man City a year or so ago when he was flying and being supported by Coppell (a cynic or realist would say this was because Doyle and Kitson were both injured).

This season, by contrast, Lita hasn't been given a sustained chance in the first team, and given all the other comments by players who Reading have fallen out with, I trust Lita's version of events with regard to Coppell's remarks about his desire to play. Lita did lack sharpness in front of goal when he came back in because he hadn't been getting the games, whereas neither Doyle nor Kitson can feel unappreciated even when not scoring. They get a good run, Lita doesn't. And I wouldn't blame him if he thought now 'sod 'em'.

Simon Cox didn't get a chance to prove himself in the Premier League. We sold him despite his excellent show in the summer competition (which I watched in its entirety online) and despite his looking like he was worth a go in a side that has been struggling to score.

In a similar vein, I remember Little complaining in the paper about being sidelined without explanation when we started in the Premier League and Seol had been brought in. Oster has also been there before. You get the sense that Reading's management lacks the ability to man-manage, that there isn't a lot of fairness or love in the Reading camp, and that's why the team as a whole aren't performing. You can say what you like about Mourinho, but whatever the rest of the country thought about him, he knew how important it was to make players feel appreciated. (This applies of course not just in football but in any work environment and beyond). Similarly, think of all the players who've been chased by Reading, and then when finally signed they're told actually they're not good enough.

And yes, we don't look at all like scoring and we always look like we're going to concede when the other team gets the ball. These things are taken as read. I just don't agree with the assessments that focus on players not being up to scratch and so on. It's all inner game and we're going out giving other team's a goal or more's advantage.

OK, I've sort of said my piece. It's not polished but hopefully people who read this will do so graciously and share their thoughts.

Rob

PS. I should add that I think all these problems were already present last season. It's just that we were getting away with it.

Rawlie19 One game a season does not make. The boys sounded like they were tired out there and just weren't up to it today, and remember we had a lot of regulars missing. Murty for instance would never have allowed the arguing that was going on after the second goal. Next week will be different you mark my words.

I like this one.

Can you post it every week?

To stop the players feeling sorry for themselves, Murty should organise a trip to Peacock Farm, or something like that.

Marek and Karacan

or

Marek and Cisse

or

Marek and Fae

Would for me all work better than Harps being in the midfield!

HARPER THE LEGEND

by IMAMATEOFJOVSKY » 05 Apr 2008 16:56

Abysmal today - totally bypassed and again proved the point that he is not a premership standard player!

People on here say he is a legend - the nearest to a legend he is , is the one you can buy in McDonalds and we all know that fast food is "sh*te - probably apt then!

Shrug. There are at least three teams worse than us. This time next week we'll be planning for next season in the Premiership.
