floyd__streete My mate Orient Ian reports the sad news of ‘You’ll never beat’ John Mackie’s sad retirement from the game. He has sold his shop in Islington and now runs a fruit and veg stall in Camden. Mackie is an absolute legend, beloved at the O’s, and will always be remembered by me for his celebrations – bedecked in head band and arms raised in triumph - in and amongst the stand of Reading supporters who mobbed him after a satisfying win at Walsall. Also remembered for leading the celebrations atop the players coach on return from promotion at Brentford. He wasn’t exactly Bobby Moore but he most certainly wasn’t Elroy Kromheer either; an absolute snip at whatever pittance we paid Sutton. Good luck John Mackie, may your melons always be ripe and your tomatoes plump and fulsome.

Hear hear!

Made up for what he lacked in talent with a huge heart that he wore on his sleeve.

Maybe Norfolk Royal can do you a few favours with good quality (so I hear) carrots at a knock down price?

John Mackie what a legend. I remember the City game as well, think it was the 3-3 draw, wicked game, great atmosphere. And STILL Mackie wasn't beaten for any of their 3 goals. I think.

Been playing a lot of FIFA2004 lately on PC,

With Williams and Brown as default central defenders, I always swap Brown for Mackie!

btw Goater scores a hell of a lot of goals you know, and Savage is a cracking supersub!

I went to the Kassam to see Oxford relegated out of the league. (Saturday 6th May 2006)
There were two exReading men on duty that day, (three if you count Leo Roget) John Mackie being one of them. He played a super game at the heart of the Orient defence. He didn't single handedly relegate the Us but he played a big part.

Mackie was a ledgend, the kinda defender we lack now, for what he lacked technically he made up for in spirit, tenacity and pure balls, never shurked out of a challenge, which if i recall got him into trouble a few times, we could do with a Mackie now.

Didnt he run a fruit n veg stall when he was playing non league, gone full circle.

All the best John, "Your never beat John Mackie".

looking back, i still remember those days as my fondest as a Reading fan, Williams, Murty,Igo, Parkinson, Butler, Foster, Curo, ledgens, all of them, and then there was La La La Rougier, he ran and ran and ran, then cocked it up, every single time lol.

Currently at AFC Hornchurch.

Unfortunately, he never came back the same player after cracking a bone at the Peterboro game towards the end of our promotion season.

A great player in his era for this football club, coming in half way through the 01/02 season and being an absolute rock. It was such a shame he couldn't feature at Brentford when we were promoted through injury, but then maybe Viveash wouldn't have hoofed it up field for Parky to flick on for Curo.

You'll Never Beat John Mackie

I have to disagree to be honest. What we need now is technically ables couple of class centre backs, the likes of sonko, cisse, ingy all give 100% all the time and never shurk a challenge either!

Nevertheless, Cheers John.

May his celery always be crunchy, his nectarines as sweet as honey and his peaches like Felicity Kendall's buttocks.
