Is this the first non-league VIP fan?

BBC Sport Maidenhead United have made a surprising new signing this week. His Royal Highness Prince Frederick von Saxe-Lauenberg is their new patron.

He is related to every reigning monarch in Europe and shares a common ancestor with the Queen in King Henry II.

Prince von Saxe-Lauenberg told BBC Radio Berkshire that he hopes to attend his first match at York Road in April.

Club chairman Una Loughrey added: "It's fitting that we play in the Royal County and have a prince as patron."

Prince von Saxe-Lauenberg lives for part of the year in the Netherlands and also has a UK base in Hale, Cheshire.

He said: "I will do my utmost best, when time permits, to serve the club in my duty as patron."

Louis is on his way out, hasn't discussed a new contract and they've started to mess him about and bench him a few times, so he is off to one of two clubs next season Wycombe or Leeds.

Nearly all the playoff pack lost today, apart from Burton winning 3-0 at Oxford.

Oh and Aldershot lost 3-1.

would you care to attempt to lend any credence to that ignorant observation?....i am genuinely amazed that your fellow "royals" supporters feel any affinity whatsoever with regard to your frankly boring persona.

Congrats to Aldershot on almost certain promotion, I think it is good news for Reading that rivals of old enjoy a minor resurgence. But what are those attendances about? Well under 3,000 to see a team take another giant leap towards sewing up the title. I think it's rather a pity really. Still, the Aldershot public showed how apathetic they were towards their local league club back in 1992 so it is hardly a surprise. I do hope that these miniscule crowds will increase with the arrival of League football next season.

i hold no hope for any major increase in crowd numbers...the demographic suggests that local incumbents in number will continue to gravitate towards stamford bridge, the emirates, white hart lane etc come match day...sad but true....it will take a bold measure from the powers that be at the garrison boys to win over a generation or two of football fans weaned on the premiership courtesy of sky bsb...

Sure, but how do you explain the rather poor crowds historically of Aldershot FC 1926 - 1992; an era without quite the saturation of top flight football coverage? Don't get me wrong, your success and status in football is judged by what happens on the pitch rather than how many people come through the turnstiles but you can't help but perhaps think league status would be somewhat more cherished in somewhere like Oxford or Exeter. This isn't fishing, just genuine disappointment from an outsider with family ties to the old Aldershot club.
