The day I "properly" fell in love with the Royals.

Something along these lines has to be sung on Saturday. We need a decent, if ironic, answer to the cries of "you've never won f**k all" that always eminate from the south stand.

We'd beaten Bradford City
We'd beaten the Coventry
Forest and Oxford had already gone home

We won it one time
We won it one time
At Wembley
We won it one time

What made it such a great performance was that the same Luton side did so well just a few weeks later v Arsenal (?) in the League Cup final.
A real family day out when my wife and my mate's mum saw their only Reading game ever and I thought then that this would be the ultimate Reading experience in my lifetime.
Little did I know............

Brilliant, brilliant day. When Harford scored I was thinking to myself 'please, please don't let us get hammered today.' Met some Luton fans in the car park afterward and they all congratulated us and we wished them luck against the Gooners. I was really rooting for them in the League Cup final. Drove a mini van full of family back to Reading and Bracknell and I was piling back cans of Stella Artois while driving! Got barred from my local that night for what shall be called over-zealous celebrations!

And the FA (in so many ways) in their moronic traditional fashion wouldnt let us defend it...

But lets not dwell on that. This was a great day. "Sealey, Sealy what's the score?"

He was so confused he told us it was 2-1.

Or perhaps those 2 fingers meant something else?

Great photos, but colour and a telescopic lens would have helped.

It was a fantastic day. We completely outnumbered the Luton fans (rather like the play off final v Walsall). Not sure where the extra 40,000 or so suddenly came from.

I remember Gilkes enjoying the wide open spaces of the Wembley pitch. They couldn't deal with his pace and we thoroughly deserved to win. The only dissapointment was that the stands were just too big for Hicks to hoof the ball out of the ground.

It was a great day especially as a work colleague of mine who was a big Luton fan was at the game and was boasting Luton were going to use the game as a dress rehearsal for the League Cup Final against Arsenal a few weeks later We played well that day and I remember Neil Smillie running aroud the corner flag after he scored....still preferred the semi final win over Coventry...magical night.
Despite the Simod glory we still got relegated that season.
