I do agree that murtys a good if not great player but hes only 33, surely it would be more sensible to wait until hes going to retire then have the testimonial as a kind of send of for him?

Not really...the convention is a testimonial after 10 years. Many players have had testimonial seasons, then carried on with their club for 2/3/4 seasons after that. Remember all the furore over Ryan Giggs £1m testimonial game a few years back...it doesn't mean the end of a career, just the marking of a milestone.

in a day and age where the length of contract means nothing and loyalty is not guarenteed I think Graeme Murty fully deserves his testimonial. The guy eptomises what Reading FC and is more worried about the community than 99% of the other premiership footballers.

I will not be surpirsed if he goes into the media at the end of his career as he has shown how adept he is on BBC Radio Berkshire and MOTD2, but this is us showing him some appreciation, not just his bank account swelling!

After the horrendous start at RFC, i seem to recall he was not very popular, not that he could help having odd length legs or whatever it was.

Good luck to the man, he worked hard turned the fans in his favour and has been a great servant to the club and us fans.

More like him please, we need hero's in our club.

The only downside (and this isn't having a go at the club) is that the testimonial is going to be a pre-season friendly and so a lot of fans will be on holiday - I'd much rather it were scheduled just after the season finishes (as with Parky's).

Fans being away does not affect attendances, proven earlier this season.

I totally agree with tribute being paid to Murts for his long service, but the idea of him making any money out of it is ridiculous.

Testimonials effectively ask the fans to give money from their pockets to line those of a man who has already earnt more money in ten years than a lot of us will in our lifetimes.

I just don't get this attitude. What he has earned in the past has nothing to do with it. What is the connection? Are you saying that because he has earned more than many other people that he shouldn't get any more money?

I do, but that is largely because they get paid so poorly in the first place. Few waiters get paid a lot more than I do and I suspect I'd be less keen to reward those that did - their regular pay would be adequate compensation for the good work.

I do believe , however, that Murts is planning to give a chunk of his testimonial money to charity - happy with that.
