Spending masses isn't always the answer but fair play to them, they're all but safe now.

We need to spend this summer. There is a lot wrong with the team we have and many need to leave and they need replacing with a better quality of player, but that costs and knowing Madejski we wont be spending more than £3-4 this summer or next.

I think it's plausable to suggest we're in need of 5-6 players with a similar amount set to leave.

I can't help but feel if we do not invest this summer, we'll not only be in this position next season, we'll be in the bottom three come May 2009.

One wonders what the reaction would be on here had Steve Coppell spent £20m to get us to 13th in the table, especially buying a strikeforce that has cost £1m per goal.

By keeping Sunderland up, Keane has achieved the minimum objective. In terms of Sunderland's recent history, that is a good result. For Sunderland to move forward, they will have to plug some seriously huge gaps in defence and midfield. However, In the long run, I suspect Keane could be another Steve Bruce, spend millions on flair players up front and tuppence on donkeys at the back.

I was actually going to comment on that post....

seriously, all the slices of humble pie have already been eaten by all most EVERYONE when they so conclusive said we were going down last year. The few reading supporters that made a passing comment on how sunderland were doing during the start of this campaign considering how awful they were in relation to the amount they invested beares into insignificance in comparison....so much so as to render cmonurz's post as borderline unmeritorious to the point of stupidity.

Yes alright you have been proven right BUT what about all the dosh Fulham spent?? Where did it get them?
As it happens I agree with you on the investment in the squad....we should stay up but I hope the club does look to try and step up in the summer and bring in some quality signings....we all know there are areas where the side could improve and if it costs £5 million on one player then so be it. Every signing is a gamble and the more you spend the bigger the risk....but if the player is worth the money spent...bingo..
As things stand buying at least one forward is going to be essential in the summer particularly with Cox gone and Lita appearing to be on his way out. A decent centre forward signing will cost a fair few million.

If we stay up (and it increasingly looks like we will) on the money we've spent, maybe if Sunderland had Coppell as manager they would have stayed up without spending the money they did. Having spent something like £20 million more than we did, we will probably be in a better position than them next season.
