I would say some of the Saints players but I'm not sure they'll be a Championship side for much longer

They wouldn't drop a division to play for Reading. Oh.

Ched Evans on loan from Man City at Norwich is one I would buy. Looks very promising.

But can the rusty key open our transfer war chest?

We're really short of left wingers.

If Convey doesn't turn his form around then all we've got is the scampering Hunt.

If we want to progress we need to have viable options and competition all over the pitch.

I think there are quite a few players from the Championship I can imagine (or at least hope) Coppell being interested in.

Marvin Elliot
Neil Clement
Zolton Gera
Michael Kightly
Wayne Hennessey
Ben Watson
Jerome Thomas
James Beattie
Richard Chaplow (I don't know why but I still quite rate him as a Sidwell type player)
Andrew Surman

I'd love us to get rid of some of the dross in our squad and replace them with two or three of those plus a couple of players that should walk into our first team and improve the starting eleven.

someone not yet a Championship player but will be very soon - Jason Scotland at Swansea. I have seen him a few times this season and he has power, skill with both feet, good awareness, and a good attitude. He has Premiership quality and we should snap him up if we can - he will be as good, if not better, than Jerome and all the other forwards mentioned thus far....mark my words!

Jason Scotland's about 30 isn't he? Not saying he's not good enough but at that age, I'd like to think we would be looking at proven Premiership quality up front

We should absolutely bust our bollocks off to get Kightly.

Agree that Chaplow could be a good option.

Would be interesting to see a list of players bought from the Championship last season.

Not many have been success, Jones and Koumas being the possible exceptions.

I really think Beattie could do us a job and would give something different. Always liked Kightly, but he's had injury problems.

Walters at Ipswich is another player I really rate.

There's not that many about though and half the league will be trying to sign them.

Lescott's a good example of that.

Not sure on a list, but there are a number of Championship players who've stepped up and performed well in the Premiership. Not all of them were signings though, players like Doyle, Shorey, Little, Sidwell etc etc all proved capable of being decent Premiership players.

Like any transfer there is always a risk the player won't settle, won't be as good as you'd hope etc etc, but cherry picking from the Championship is a reasonable way for a club like Reading to bolster the squad. We probably need to compliment that policy with the odd proven Premiership player too though.

Some other players that have stepped up over the last few years and looked more than decent in the Premiership

Ben Foster, Tim Chaill, Michael Dawson, Dean Whitehead, Steven Reid, Ashely Young, Dean Ashton, Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Tom Huddlestone, Ryan Taylor, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka

It is possible to unearth a few gems, sometimes it's going to cost a bit more than buying from abroad, and sometimes it's not going to come off, but we should still be looking at the better players from the divisions below us.

We need quality players who can improve our side from day one of next season.

Where they come from doesn't really bother me, as long as they turn out to be better than we've got.

I'd much rather we gambled on the likes of Kightly or Gera than another Fae or Kebe though.
