Nominations are out:

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo leads the nominations for the Professional Footballers' Association players' player of the year.

The Portuguese international, 23, who has scored a phenomenal 37 goals this season, also won the award last term.

Arsenal pair Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor are also up for the prize, along with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres.

There must be an error, where is Lampard?

No great surprises there, except maybe David James.

Ronaldo will get both. And probably the Football Writers Player of the Year as well.

Ronaldo by a country mile. Torres a well-deserved runner-up.
James, Fabregas and Adebayor have all been decent. For me Gerrard's been poor, surprised Vidic didn't get nominated.

Agree about Vidic, would probably include Flamini ahead of Fabregas as well although I suspect i'm in a minority.

IIRC (and I'm fully prepared to be corrected), the voting for players' player of the year is over by the end of January - hence why CF is in the list due to his performances at the start of the season.

No you're right, that's why Oster's missing.

The trouble with this sort of thing is that we have much more of a recent memory of how players have performed rather than recalling how they were say in September and October.
Fabregas' form has hit a lull recently whereas he was fabulous earlier on in the season.
Ronaldo is a shoe-in for the main award but should he be considered at 22(?) for a YOUNG player award?
I would have thought that a young player should be somebody on-the-up at say 18 or 19 with potential rather than a seasoned international.
Mind you are there any here?
In Spain they have the 17 year-old Bojan and in Italy the young Brazilian (is it Pato?) who is 18 whereas I can't immediately think of a youngster aged 18 or 19 who has made a serious impact on our game other than (at just a bit older now?)Micah Richards.

I’d be inclined to agree, or at the very least that players nominated for the main award should not be eligible for the young player award.

Bojan and Pato look like the real superstars, as you say, the former has played 35 times for Barca already.

Fernando Torres is 24! How on earth is he in the running for the Young Player award?!

As has been previously said, it should be contended amongst young, up and coming players who are at the most 21 years-old in my opinion.

Well it becomes a bit of a sham when most of the world's best players are under 24 - the age cut-off was obviously decided in a different era and it's time to review it.

It would be a travesty if the greatest goal scoring midfielder of our generation wasn't nominated.

I must admit that I too was shocked that Michael Ballack hadn't been nominated.

I'm surprised that Michael Johnson isn't in the young players list. He was outstanding at the start of the season and is a genuine young player at 19.

Joe Hart should probably be in there as well.

Other 'youngsters' I'd have thought should be in there are, Ashley Young (although he's 22), Clichy (22), Walcott (but only because he's made a bit of an impact in the last month or so), and maybe Mark Noble (20). I was going to suggest Leon Osman, but it turns out he's almost 27!!!

It does just show how few young players are breaking through and making an impact at the moment, something that the likes of Henry and Pearce etc should probably bear in mind when they're thinking about their Reading careers.

I thought he was one of the Rooney generation. In fact, I was thinking he was the one who took Rooney’s youngest scorer record, but I remember now that was James Vaughan.

Ronaldo then Torres. Not sure how Gerrard is up for nomination. Wednesdays game against Arsenal highlighted how poor he is generally against good opposition.

which would rule out all but Agbonlahor and Richards from that list?

Craig Gardner in the short-list would be funny but rather missing the point I fear.
