my memories of The Rec aren't great.

Being in the worst terrace crush ive experienced the last time we met in the league. Which, ironically, was a week or so before Hillsborough.

Them knocking us out the LDV when they lost 10-1 to Southend the week before.

Saw a non-league game against Newbury about 10 years back to watch a match with the one season experiment with kick ins. A minute into the game some evil looking bloke with a pint in his hand screamed & spat from right behind me "Kill the Reading Scum...." :|

League football welcomes back Aldershot and their tiny fanbase. Personally, I have no real animosity towards them because I was only 9 years olf the last time we played them in the league, in fact I have a family link to Aldershot FC as my mother used to be taken along to games at The Rec by her grandfather.

Nice to have another local team back in the league; were it not for the fact that we are off the radar for the Shots in this day and age (fanbase and facilities) I'd suggest that Aldershot are our most significant local rivals. We have been playing Aldershot FC since the 1930's, long before Headington (Oxford) United joined the league and the Swindon Town obsession of many Reading supporters continues to puzzle me; Swindon is 40 miles away, as close as QPR is for instance. Swindon people speak with very different accents to us and any 'rivalry' appears to be rather one sided to be quite honest.

I look forward to returning the brick thrown at me in 1971 when we won 2-1 at the Rec and a young Riseley was chased by a mob headed by a youthful Jim's dad from American Pie.

Having seen quite a few of the Shots fans in the bar at Torquay before the game i can confirm most of them are pikey as fook.

Ive never seen such a bunch of retards in 1 town than on Aldershot away days. A total dump of a ground in a town filled with incest and a load of sh1t stabbing soldier boys.

However, a great achievement and good to see them back.

Was that the game where Mick Gooding equalised with a last minute penalty? If so, it was horrible. I saw hardly any of the game due to the crushing. The perimeter fences where exteremely high, even for the 1980s and rusty as fukk.

Stuart Beavon wasn't it? Deep into injury time. Easter Monday IIRC. Right in the middle of the Big Banana craze. Loads of inflatables there.

Gillingham has a superb pub near the away end, though (The Livingstone?).

'greed about Luton though. No redeeming features, whatsoever.

Yes, definitely Easter Monday. For some reason I recall that they announced the attendance as being way over the official ground capacity during the game. Then, in newspaper reports afterwards, the attendance had magically reduced to just below the capacity.

Proper, proper dodgy.

I'm from the generation for whom Aldershot are our only true MUTUAL rivals.
I've never seen us lose to them, mind, even at the Rec.

I half winced this season with every victory they achieved, but that is a winky oxf*rd reaction and I wish them well after getting back to the League after falling so low.

But Division 2 is high enough, thank you.
