Huntley & Palmer Article in the Times today from Russell Kempson

John Madejski wears a red badge on his open-neck shirt. “No, I was not playing football or skiing,” it reads. He is tired of people asking how he broke his right ankle, which he did while walking in Kent on Easter Monday. “Trouble is, I didn’t appreciate how poor people’s eyesight is,” he said. So he has had to explain, anyway, again and again.

The Reading chairman should wear another badge: “No, we are not going to get relegated.” He is trying to remain positive. “Suddenly, the world and his wife want to talk to me,” he said wearily. “They just want to pick over the corpse, the carcass, and it’s not very nice. But that’s the reality and I can’t hide from it.”

How thoroughly tiresome, now having to take the rough with the smooth. When things were going swimmingly well, he didn't seem too worried about media attention!

“You have more chance of selling in the Premier League than in the Championship,” he said. “If the unthinkable happens, the opportunity, that moment, might be gone. But, no, I won’t walk away. There would have to be cutbacks, of course, and we would have to do our best to emerge again.”

So here we go, shades of what happened after our Wembley playoff failure final. Cutbacks and the departure of our best players followed by a long time in the lower league wilderness. Only then, there was maybe some justification regarding lack of funds, infrastructure, support etc.

This time we will be dropping with a very hefty parachute payment plus whatever is left from the PL riches of the last couple of seasons (not to mention a very successful Championship season prior to that). However, rather than investing that in an extremely serious attempt to get back into the PL at the earliest possible opportunity we are being promised 'cutbacks'.

Yesterday BBCRB had a football pundit on from one of the Brummie radio stations. His view was that if the likes of Birmingham and Reading did not bounce straight back with the assistance of the massive parachute payments (£32M =?), their managers deserved to be fired.

Unfortunately it would appear that our manager (whoever that might be) is unlikely to see much of that money and, as a consequence, is going to be left trying to fight with both arms tied firmly behind his back!

Madejski Hints at Cutbacks!

by Mr Controversial » 08 May 2008 14:36

Todays Times has run an article on John Madejski, usual story that includes club for sale, Churchill style mentality to win on Sunday blah blah blah.

However, one piece of the article that annoyed me was as follows - quoted word for word from the paper on the subject of relegation.

Madejki "No, I wont walk away. There would have to be cutbacks of course and we would have to do our best to emerge again

Hang on, let me get this straight. Since promotion two seasons ago we have had very little by the way of increased costs when compared the the costs of playing in the Championship. As I understand it the club made a hefty £6million profit last year.

How can the Chairman come out one week and spout about splashing £20million if we stay up but should we get relegated we will need to make cutbacks - what is there to cut back on? As I see it, expenditure couldnt have increased since promotion and with the added revenue the Premiership brings??

So what does he intend to cutback on?
1) Wages - not exactly throwing the dosh out are we compared to other teams
2) Transfers - what transfers? maybe £5million tops spent in 2 years.

Is Mr Madejski really so far out of touch that he thinks the best future for a relegated Reading would be to "cutback". With an attitude like that we might as well go and watch Aldershot play.

Rant over
Mr C

Don't just think about the playing side of things - there are a whole load of people required to support the infrastructure of a PL club that aren't needed for a CCC one - match-day hospitality people, publicity and PR staff, maybe sales-centre people, who knows?

He also says that it was down to Coppell that we didn't invest in January.
I wonder if Sir Steve would agree.

I think our wage bill in 2006 was about £10-12m. Now it's around £26m.

I don't have any problem with the idea that we'll need to cut costs when we go down considering our revenue will go from something like £60-70m down to about £15m plus whatever the parachute payments are for the next season or two.

We should be able to benefit from the money we've made over the last two seasons, and the money from the parachute payments, but realistically we'll need to see some level of cost reduction when we're relegated.

Another ill-informed rant from someone who seems to have no knowledge of how a football club is run (and I don't either but I do know that the original comments are complete crap).

doubled wage bill, bigger squad, higher wages all round, new training ground, new media facility,
9 years of loss making to recoup, loans to mr mad to pay back, etc etc

6 million profit last year-15-20 million this year? i reckon after getting rid of some of the highest earners: hunt and shorey and 1 other?, we will be about set up perfectly to freshen up the squad and push for the chamionship again, but at more sensible wage rates, and a bit in reserve in case we fail to go up straight away and to cope with the inevitable crowd shrinkage

cant see anything wrong with what hes said really-looks like apart from impending relegation he has ensured we continue to grow and flourish no matter what division we are in

name a chairman who has said upon relegation-"we will invest more money in players, and pay more in wages than ever before" when we go down to ensure we come back up?

It's really quite simple,

Club goes down = less money coming in = less money being spent or cutbacks.

For example, I dare say a lot of the players have pay cuts built in to their contract on relegation. Also there will be a number of outlays that we can justify (away from the football side) that will have to go in a lower division.

It's just very normal business sense, we will be in a smaller market so we have to budget accordingly.

Probably because he couldn't get players better than we have already on the wages that we were prepared to pay.

No ProZone would be one example, plus whoever looks after this at the club. Should save north of £100K a year.

I agree - I heard JM on BBC Radio Berks, and it was difficult to hear what he was saying over the sound of running water as he washed his hands of the situation.

Surely the Cutbacks refers to season ticket prices

I'm glad London Irish have rebooked

If it ain't broke, it still needs fixing
Reading made plenty of friends up and down the country on their first season in the Premier League, exceeding expectations by finishing eighth after flirting with Europe. After that, well, nothing. Coppell looked to rely on pretty much the same players and same tactics to repeat the trick and they were found out. If you aren't even going to try and build on your success then perhaps you don't deserve any more.

Nice one Mr Ego, nice one. You may be a fantastic businessman, (well £400M is about more than £399.99M more than me!), but you are a grade A1 plonker sometimes!

Wonder if we'll have the pleasure of Leeds United next season? Be nice to have one or two "big" games to look forward to!

Interesting to contrast JM comments with Mohammed Al Fayed who is reportedly offering Fulham players additional incentives to win on Sunday.

I wish mods would stop combining threads just as I press to post!

Do people not remember the 'cutbacks' that JM implemented last time we failed to reach our Premiership target?

The 'sale of the century' when it came to letting our best players go and only a fraction of the proceeds reinvested in replacements. I wonder who will be our Michael Meaker to replace Marek?!

No doubt the fans hard earned cash will still be called upon 'to enable us to compete effectively'.

'Real ambition' - my *rse!
