So, after being told for the last few home games that each one might be the most important game in the Royals' history (NO PRESSURE PLAYERS!) - presumably the Derby game is the biggest game in club history?

Interested to know of any other games that might qualify for that honour...

the game that won us premiership promotion?

our first ever game in the Premiership?

around the time when we were going to be merged with Oxford, and Reading FC almost ceased to be?

Was there a time in the old Division Four where we went into a game with the possibility of dropping out the Football League altogether?

I see what you're saying, if you mean that the manager and players (and fans) should focus on the task at hand each game.

But in the broader view in the context of what it means for the club, the next game we play after the Derby one won't be as meaningful as this one. The manager may say "We've put the last game of the 07-08 season behind us and this one is just as important in terms of starting off on the right foot in the new Premiership/Championship season" but that is just to focus the players and draw a line under the previous season. There's more to be gained or lost on the result of this one game v Derby than rests on the first game of next season.

I'd say not, because we could win it and still fail.

Sadly, I think the last game - at home to Tottenham - was the biggest. And we blew it.

Yeah, I was thinking I should have put the most important two games in our history as today's great escape is a two-parter with needing Portsmouth to do something which is out of our control.

Which means that either the Tottenham or Fulham home games were possibly bigger in terms of how Reading could help itself out.

Can't comment on history but certainly in my 11 years of going only the Brentford game stands out as bigger. Leicester was a non entity because whilst it did send us up, we could have been promoted the week after anyway so it's rather irrelevant. Brentford was last day of the season drama. We could look back and say, this game was important because of this and that, but we must focus on today and today only. Tomorrow is the time for reflection.

The club was losing money hand over fist, Smee's bank balance was shrinking by the minute and the likes of Annie Bassett were doing their best to alienate the 2,500 hardcore fans that remained.
