I'm not feeling particularly upbeat after reading his interview on the official site

Tilehurst End Personally I'm very proud to have a man of integrity in charge of my team, a man who is highly respected by his peers, pundits, players, journalists etc., a man who does not try to be a celebrity and has little time for the prima-dona modern player.

I just hope that he can rekindle his enthusiasm and find a new batch of "young and hungry" to take us back to the promised land, with maybe the help of a fresh, young coach who has played in the modern game.

Are you busy Mr Sheringham

You may find one or two difficulties reconciling the first and last paragraphs of your post...!

The question is how much will Mr Mad do to keep sir steve. Surely he should just try tell him to honour his contract no matter what. That failing get him upstairs to director (although dont know where that will leave nicky hammond) and look to get some fresh face in. I would ideally like to see coppell stay with wally sacked and parky in!!

I think we should get a load of us down to the training ground so he knows how much we want him here and a boost for the players as well. They did work their ass off this year except in a few games.

E I E I E I O, Up the football league we go. When we get promotion, this is what we'll sing. We are Reading, super Reading, Coppell is our King!

JM: if (and when) Steve comes to you with his resignation letter, you have to tear it up in front of him. Relegation is tough enough but losing Coppell really would turn disappointment into despair!

Coppell has always said he only signs one year contracts as he believes in giving himself and the club the opportunity to reflect at the end of each season - AND because he believes in the principle that contracts should be adhered to.

He also wants to take full responsibility.

If he tenders his resignation he effectively backs down on his contract and abdicates responsibility by walking away from his opportunity to take that responsibility seriously and try to lead us back up.

SSC must ask himself the question - is he the man of principal he purports to be? If he is - he must stay. If he's not he will be letting a lot of people down judging by what i'm reading on here.

That said, we will never reconcile the "Madjeski get your cheque book out" question (i.e. would it make a difference) unless we have a manager prepared to bang his door down and apply some pressure - and SSC is never going to do that.

This is very true.

If, as some people are convinced, Madejski hasn't given Coppell the funds he felt he needed to improve the side I can't see Coppell being one to apply the kind of pressure that someone like Pardew would've done to get that bit extra out of him. It just doesn't seem to be his style.

I've always felt that Coppell wasn't aggressive enough in the transfer market and that he was never going to sell the club enough to the players he would want to bring in. Pardew, for all his spin and bluster, was one for actively going out and trying to raise the bar for us. If anything Coppell has been the opposite in this respect.

this is why pardew left though, he applied the pressure and got nothing, and for what its worth he would not have taken us as far as sir steve has!

I so hope he stays. If we can keep core of the squad and sign some new young players, and get ourselves back up, we can make significant investment and try to consolidate in the Premiership. They need a long-term plan. Coppell has one year left on his contract, hopefully he can honour it, if we get promotion he can sign again, if not he can leave. Pleaaassseee Stay. Also i really hope we keep Harper and Kitson.

Sir Steve Coppell, Please stay..........

Please have the stomach for the fight to get us back to the Premiership.

You have my 100% backing and support to lead the Royals into next season. You also have the 100% backing and support of all the fans that sit around me in the Mad Stad and of all the fans that drink with me in the bar after the game.

We want you to stay and continue the great work you are doing at Reading FC. Last season was a brave effort against the odds. We haven't been on a level playing field with the other premier league clubs and we understand that. What Coppell has done for Reading in the past few years has been extraordinary.

Please stay and do it again. Your new and refreshed team will be even better. You will be starting to build you new team from a more advanced and advantageous position than last time. Stay and reap the benefits from the seeds that you have sewn in the past few years.

Don't let some other muppet undo all the great work that you have done to progress Reading this far. Please stay and build on your already impressive achievements. I want you to stay and everyone I know wants you to stay.

I love you Sir Steve, please have a re-think. We spoke to you yesterday at the hotel. You ARE a legend and I doubt we'll EVER have anyone as good as you again. If you don't stay, thank you so much for allowing us all to have a taste of the Premiership and for being such a lovely man and a gentleman. If you go, good luck with whatever you do - you deserve it.

Think is with the contract, none of us know the exact terms. There may well have been a clause that said that the end of the first season of the two years, the club and he could agree to part ways or take up the option of the second year.

We'll never know of course, but I suspect you're right.

I do believe you Coppell was in a strong position to go banging on the door though, but we'll also never really know if he did or not either.

Scarface Enjoy your "break from football" whilst we languish in the Championship you gutless tosser.

The irony of someone hiding behind an anonymous username while calling someone else 'gutless'.
