It's possible but I don't think so. However, I do think we'll do well to consolidate our place in the Championship. Dropping to League One is the worst I could expect over the next 3-4 years.

If you look at what's happened to other clubs then there's a key target to achieve. Clubs that have returned to the PL in the first 2 years (i.e. before the parachute money runs out) have been OK - I'm thinking of West Ham, Sunderland, West Brom etc.

But other teams who haven't hit this 2 year deadline have almost all gone down the pan - look at Bradford, Norwich, Wolves, Ipswich, Southampton. None of them are effectively in competition to return to the PL any time soon.

I would argue Wolves and Ipswich who were mightily close to a PO spot this season, If ipswich had won 4 or 5 away games they'd have gone straight up, Wolves should do well next season as they've got a new mony man behind the club. But otherwise it's a valid point.

True, but the main problem with those that haven't come back is that there has been some form of lack of stability at almost all the clubs you list that has had an effect on their ability to return.

The Championship is going to be a very dense place next season - no Scunnies or Colchesters unless there's a surprise in the playoffs; Swansea, Forest and probably Leeds will be up to snuff right away. Teams like Southampton, Coventry and Norwich haven't got where they are by pure mismanagement - it's the grind of Championship life where the margins are pretty tiny. It's important to remember that when you look at a club like Southampton or even Leicester, that's us. Both those clubs came down with good players and high hopes. The longer you stay down, the more the players and the hopes erode.

The whole tragedy of this sorry season is that it would have cost far, far, less to keep us in the Premier League than it will cost us to get back there.

I guess it kind of balances itself out for each division - One or two of the right signings this past January or last summer to keep us in the Prem might not have been too much to fork out but then we would have to invest significantly this summer to retain Premiership status next season - at the inflated Premiership player prices. But that would have been cushioned by all those TV £millions and presumably high attendances again.

Going down to the CCC with a stronger financial base from the Prem money, reduced wages/price tags to cope with and whichever players we retain having Prem experience in them means 'theoretically' we're in a better position to challenge for promotion than we were in 2005-6. Of course, we all know it isn't always as simple as that. Plus we would have to make two steps again - building a team to win promotion and then adding to it to stay in the Premiership for longer next time.

Sort of summed the season up from top to bottom really. The over confidence almost arrogance that we were 'too good to go down' as we finished 8th the season previous, despite all the warning signs being there from as early as Bolton away this season.

Ahh well, rebuild for next season and i can probably afford a season ticket now so every cloud.

Actually you did deserve to go down. I would not wish physical injury on any man, friend or foe but after the dangerous antics of certain Reading players in the game against Chelsea last season something had to happen.

I tend to agree with USA. Complacency was our undoing. Some of the players thought they'd made it - forgetting that it was hard work, rather than an abundance of skill, that got us to those heights.
