FWIW Steve said at the Forum that his weakness is being over loyal to his players and possibly avoiding making tough decisions.

I would be willing to put up with this 'weakness' next season if Steve stays. Many of our squad are going to look good in the CCC.

So the message is simple:

STAY

Steve Coppell is the second best thing that ever happened to Reading Football Club, and I'm VERY keen for him to stay. (John Madjeski is the best thing that ever happened to RFC)

Steve will learn from this experience, and he probably already has. Yes, he was too loyal, and it takes a brave man to let players go or put them on the bench if those players were key to your success.

You only have to look at the two brightest managerial lights in the Premier League to see that it can be done. Ferguson has let players go like Ince and van Nistleroy, and Wenger did outstanding business in selling Henry last summer. SSC will now have to change is core team. Some by his choice, and some (e.g. Shorey) by their choice.

PorkyRfc
Scarface Why would you want a manager that ruined 4 years of great work, in 2 transfer windows, by sticking loyal and completely mis-judging his group of players. What then made it worse, is in January when all his mistakes were highlighted in black and white, he yet again failed to do anything. This man lost the plot this season and he is soley responsible for the relegation.

I thank him for getting to the Premiership, but history says this man is a bottler and I expect him to go and I hope it's soon. We need a fresh start, with fresh ideas and no loyalty to underachieving players. We still have the basis of a decent squad good enough to jump straight back, just not with a manager who thinks kebe and Oster are Premiership players.

We mustn't get clowded by what he achieved 2 years ago, it's this years achievement that I'm interested in.

Mark my words when I suggested in Aug we'd get relegated fans mocked, but when we're bottom 2 next year at Christmas YOU will be calling for Coppell's head.

You are in a tiny, tiny minority

It might be a tiny minority but it looks like it includes Coppell himself.

Coppell was brilliant for us in getting us into the Premiership but even he can now see where he went wrong over the last 18 months. The way I look at it is similar to Scarface but only because it seems that Coppell has lost the desire and the ability to manage this set of players properly.

If, and it's a massive if, he can get back to managing the club properly, and not just trotting out the same old excuses week in week out then I'd be happy for him to continue. Unfortunately I'm not convinced that he can, or wants, to do that.

The next 18 months are massive for the furture of this club. Having a half hearted manager at the helm would be a death wish for a club with ambitions itentions.

I agree, what happens if steve coppell stays, and keeps virtually the same team.

If Sir Steve does stay he needs to be enthusiastic and inspired. I am sure he will continue to be professional but the job needs more than that. I would love him to stay because I think he has inspired a team of average go getters (with the exception of Sidewell - how we missed him- Kitson - a class above the others, and Shorey - apologies not accepted for this year!) to play some great football and earn some wonderful results over the last few years. If Coppell still has the energy and passion please stay - but if he has any doubts, is tired or uninspired, the players will pick up on it and best wish a fond farewell. Reading should still have a bulging warchest given our lack of spending and the Royals should be ready for another tilt at the top if we can get a few changes -the earlier the better. I do hope he has it in him but we shouldn't try and change his mind - only he would really know and I know (my sister is a friend of his) that he is intelligent and wise enough to be honest with himself.

agreed, if he wants to go hes done enough to be respected enough to be allowed to leave
its important he knows exactly how we do feel about it though, either way

I am a huge SC fan and think he is our best ever manager.

But do we want someone to stay who hasn’t got the desire anymore?

What happens if next year he wants a break again?

It saddens me to say it but it looks like SC isn’t the future. Even if the demonstrations etc work, he will only want to be here in the short term

I think we need to start building for the long term future with a new manager

i think the demo is purely to express our support

if he doesnt feel up to it any more - it works as a great thankyou for all the good times
if he was wavering and wasnt sure if the majority of fans wanted him to stay-this will convince him
if he wants to stay-itll be a great boost for him, and will bring the club and fans together like nothing else

Must admit, that's my thinking. Just from the way he was speaking and his body language at the forum and then at Derby, my gut feeling is Coppell feels he's run his course. We can't beg someone to stay who doesn't want to be here. If Coppell wants to stay then he stays simple and great, but if I suspect he doesn't really want to be here then he should do the right thing and walk away now, no questions asked.

I support the rally fully though, it's a nice gesture.

It would be gret if he stays on at least until December. Everything will settle and then he can hand over to Dolan or someone else who knows the ropes and the setup.

If he can then stay around as a consultant on a retainer, even better.

No doubt about the best manager that Reading have had - Mr Steve Coppell.
I hope that he stays and I am sure that he will learn from the mistake of this season - the lack of transfer market action - and ensure that we are better placed next time. I fully understand how difficult it must be to attract decent players to the club, wage structure and the small club image etc, but I am sure he can get us back up and then get some reasonable quality players in that can keep us there!!!!!

He simply must stay.

if he wants to go, no one wants to make him feel bad
if hes going, this is a great way to give him the thanks he deserves for all the joy he has brought to dreary old reading
