Six months after he joined I was chanting for him to be sacked, along with everyone else.

Not for the first time in my life, I was utterly, utterly wrong.

Steve you HAVE to stay. I will never be able to thank you enough for what you have done for my little football club.

Get a grip! At the end of the day his CV will showed he has been relegated three times at the top level including taking Reading down. He must have sanctioned most if not all of the transfers and his tactics and loyalty to certain players beggered belief at times during the season.

I certainly would not want him sacked or to leave as I believe he needs a season in the Championship to rectify the errors made this season and his achievements in getting Royals promoted in the first place are unparalled. I think some of the hype on here about getting him to stay are widly exaggarated if you consider it is relegation we are talking about and in most walks of life noone gets rewarded for failure!

And as I have said Tilehurst Mike, it's not just Coppell who is culpable. He's held his hands up and taken the blame for our position, but there are plenty of other people - management and players alike, who should be holding their hands up too. All we're saying is that despite having made mistakes, we don't believe there is anyone better placed to help us give it another go next season. If he decides to go, I'll be devastated, but will understand his reasons and he'll go with my good wishes.

106 points, 8th place, then relegation
not a failure in my eyes

this is reading FC, and we are teeny tiny
any time spent up there was miraculous

As the manager though he should've been taking actions to stop or nulify the mistakes of others. That's what he's there to do. Unfortunately he couldn't do it this year and it sounds like he knows why and it's not something he can get over.

As heart warming as all this outpouring of support is, I do think it's a bit misplaced.

I dont consider that he has failed. As discussed ad infinitum on here, ask any of us three years ago what we would want for the club, and people would have talked about yo-yoing between the championship and premiership for a years before finding stability. Coppell is on his way to delivering that.

Funnily enough, it has taken the Americans to show us the real way to honour the great man! He must be a legend there too!

But ask anyone, including Coppell, at the start of the season what the aim was and it was to avoid relegation.

He has failed in that and he accepts it and recognises that as the manager of the team it is largely his responsibilty.

That takes nothing away from the significance of his previous success, and looking over his whole tenure he has been a success, but that does not mean he hasn't failed this season due to his own mistakes and that he probably isn't (by the noises he's been making) the best man to take us forward again.

When all is said and done nothing will be gained from large scale change.

Steve Coppell is the best and most successful manager that our club has ever had.

The manner in which we went up, the way that we as a club have conducted ourself in the last 4 years, and the way in which we are perceived by the knowledgeable football community is almost entirely down to Steve Coppell.

Thanks for the ride Steve, and can we have some more please.

All this talk about Coppell being swayed just means it will knock us down more if he resigns. I'm not believing it until I hear something official, much as I hope it is true.
