Could we have had more of a crack at the goal difference?

by Schards#2 » 12 May 2008 09:34

Relegated by 3 goals, I can't help wondering whether we should have had more of a crack at trying to win 7-0.

Derby were abject and it would not have been beyond the realms of possibility to score another 3, i'm sure if the Fulham game had been played earlier and we knew we had to win by seven, we'd have gone flat out for it so I wonder why we didn't.

I suppose it's all hindsight having seen how poor Derby were and that the win was the main consideration but I wonder if the players have any regrets over this.

I don't think at any point we sat back, so they probably did have a go at it, we kept going forward and had other chances.

Bar a few mins before half-time, seemed to be constantly going for it...may have been a lull after Fulham scored for a bit but that is understandable.

Lita should have done better with a couple of first half chances but don't think we could have asked for anymore yesterday. If only we could have scored one of those against Spurs last week.....

THREE MORE GOALS

by MR. CYNICAL » 14 May 2008 21:56

Apologies if this has been mentioned, there are so many threads on our relegation that i can't be arsed to read through them all!!
Did anyone realise that if we got 3 more goals it would of been enough? In that respect, you can say it was in our hands. How that would of pissed Fulham off! Was going to be hard to get a win at Derby but no one expected 4-0 and when you saw the 8-1 City reverse you begin to wonder if 7-0 to Reading would of been so unrealistic after all,and even more so because Derby were so poor. Just wondered if anyone realised this.

Yes, we realised that 3 goals would have been enough and would have pissed off Fulham.

Yes, but in order to score 3 more goals (and thus stay up) we would have had to 'do a Leeds', spend massively, mortgage our future, and put the club at great risk financially. :P

Harper could have squared it to Lita instead of shooting, the ref could have given that pen for handball, and Murty could of got his 'effin shot on target

Me and Donfers have been texting each other "3 GOALS" for the last couple of days to releave stress a bit.

I don't think it's really working for him. I'm actually fine about it all after the display for Coppell last night. I'm feeling strangely positive. But....

THREE pFCUKING GOALS!!!!!

The thing was, by the time we knew Fulham had scored, we actually needed four goals, and only had 15 minutes to get them in. Maybe we could have gone gung-ho and got them, but it's just another "maybe if" to add to a pretty long list.

I'm just glad we weren't two points behind Bolton, thinking a win for us and a defeat for them would have kept us up. That really would have been sickening.

Potential Sickener alert

Had we not conceded a silly goal to Fulham chasing the game in both matches, or done it in one occasion and scored another against Derby, we'd done it :|

Hopefully we learn the importance of battling till the end whatever the score is. 2-1 down at Fulham and we concede in the 88th minute, 1-0 down at home and we concede in the 90th. I'm not one for 'what ifs', we deserved to go down but if we hadn't let in those two breakaways, we'd have stayed up by 1 goal.

Course we were looking for an equaliser, so like most what ifs its invalid but even so I'm going wake up thinking of those pcunts Healy and Nevland

Great minds eh URZZZZZZZ?

The fun of "what ifs". Had we lost to Fulham 0-1 or 1-2, then we would only have needed one more goal. Really though, we lost too many games by more than the odd goal (3-0 at home to Bolton springs to mind), whereas Fulham and others lost a lot of matches narrowly. How many teams win 10 matches in a premier league season and go down? Our conversion of potential defeats into battling draws is probably the main problem - look at Bolton and Wigan at Chelsea, we never did that against anyone and just once would have been enough.

I blame Man City myself, fancy leading 2-0 with 20 minutes to go and losing 3-2 at home to the next-to-bottom team at the time? I ask you...

It's not only that we lost quite a few games by more than 1 goal, but also the games we won besides the Derby game, we haven't emphatically beat anyone, we only won by 2 clear goals on 2 occasions (Liverpool & Man City, not including the last game) that is where we really lost it.

Yep my Fulham mate mentioned that the other day, that if we hadn't let in the 2 late goals in both games v Fulham and just lost 2-1 & 1-0 then we'd have been up.

Did I leave before the end of the Bolton home game ? It was only 2-0 when I left
