Reading has the better manager and players.
If I want tradition I'll join Leeds United in League One.

Super.

Afraid it doesn't work like that boys.
The media, pundits and history books all praise clubs with history and it makes them more attractive as clubs to players.
Reading couldn't sign anyone in two seasons in the top flight, wigan have had 3 now and still only manage to get unknowns that they pay well over the odds wages for. No one wants to join us or them because we have no history and have yet to proove we have a meaningful future either. I bet if us and derby go for the exact same player next season said player will pick derby every time, again also with wolves. Their dads will of told them wolves were once a big club and the player will opt for them, its just how it works, fickle or not. Players want glamour and spotlight and reading don't have either. Pure and simple why in 4 transfer windows in the prem we signed absolute diddly, no one wants to play for us, we are too small of a club.

From what sense I can make out of that, it is complete dross.

Example: 'Their dads will of told them wolves were once a big club and the player will opt for them'

What the phuck is that about?

well apparently 43% of us (11:06 15.5.08) think it was his fault.. not sure why though.. Madejski won't free up funds. And won't free up funds in the summer because we're not in the prem

I doubt whether a player signs for us, particularly from abroad, has much of an eye on our 'tradition.'

However, he will have an eye on the wages, and I suspect that is why we have trouble signging players.

Most of the time your father is the reason you get into football, you see him watching on the tv, he takes you to a game, kicks a ball round the park with you, etc . In our father's lifetime all the clubs you mentioned have been a bigger club than reading and more attractive. I've listened to my dads football opinions for years so I know about who was successful and when, who won what and what players they had,etc In 20 years time if i have kids into football and man united are in the bottom of league one ill most likely tell them they are a massive club and I remember their success well, i will tell them about ronaldo, rooney, scholes, etc. If aldershot are a couple of places above united in the league, looking much better for promotion, I would still encourage my son to play for united, reason being aldershot are nobody and they never will be, kind of like reading on a scale to the clubs you mentioned. They might have one season above united but thats all it'll ever be. Reading as a club have won nothing, we don't have a big fanbase and we don't pay big wages. Wolves have done nothing for years and get 25k+ every season, they are a more attractive club than us and most businessmen would probably suggest they are a more attractive investment of a club also.

Because it was a leading question in the poll with a forced choice and no option to say none of the above.

That's not quite true, though, is it. Coppell has publically said he chose not to spend the money - for a range of reasons. Some of which I think are valid and others that I don't. He's clearly made mistakes and errors of judgement this season.

However, I also accept that continuity is better than trying to change things around. We're not a bad side, we've punched above our weight and while I think that we could have done better last season, the core of the side isn't bad, there's nothing that some care and attention can't solve. Keeping him is less of a gamble than trying to change that position.

I think you've got your wires crossed.
You're babbling to the wrong person.
I haven't mentioned any clubs - apart from Leeds United.

If I had a choice between WIgan and Leeds United, it would be Wigan - all the way.

Well that I would agree with. Wigan are in the premiership, leeds two divisions below.

However, reading and leeds might well be in the same division next year, who is a player more likely to chose despite us being more successful in the last few years? Definitely not reading, i'll tell you that much.

Totally Madejski's fault.

EVen if we're to believe the spin that money was available, the wage structure is what did it for us and that lies in Madejski's hands.

It was why Sidwell went (when Coppell was desperate for him to stay) and that's probably THE biggest reason we were a different side. And it's the reason we couldn't get anyone decent in.

99% Madejski, perhaps 1% Coppell for not really stamping his feet and demanding a more realistic wage structure.

This is so easy it shocks me that so many people can't see it.

Maybe for this season, but its also Madejski's fault the club is now an 'established' Championship side rather than bumbling alsong between the old Div 3 and Div4

I think people are underestimating the effect being in the Prem.

A lot of the teams in the championship will remember the 106 point team and add to that 2 seasons of competing in the prem.

Considering the difference in quality of teams I don’t think any player would pick Derby over us. For e.g. correct me if I wrong but WBA are similar size to us, people considered them to be a bigger club after a few years in the prem. Then they managed to cherry pick the best championship talent – Brunt etc.

Before we were in the prem whenever a team came down you always had the tendency to look up at them and would use RFC’s performances against them as a good indicator of how good our team is. Maybe its false optimism but I am feeling quite confident about next season. Can’t see where the threat will come from:

Wolves – Apart from Elvian Blanks – quite an average team. Seem to struggle to get over the line
Watford – Playoff Hangover, average team anyway
Derby – Confidence shot, losing mentality, will they be able to build a team in one season? They sneaked up in the playoffs initially aswell, poor team before they went up
Birmingham – Chairman resigning, lost Zarate
Charlton – Pards seems to be losing the fans, had a terrible season
QPR – Money! They could be a threat
Cardiff – Not got the money to mount a challenge, will probably have to sell best players
Palace – Could be a threat, but I can’t see what they can offer a player we can’t. They don’t even own their stadium

Also the championship was poor last year. WBA were champions with <83 points. You could have lost 19 times last season and still been champions. The teams, which are still here, we should be able to finish above. Apart from Sidwell we still have the 106-point team. With parachute payments and the strong financial footing anyway I think we could offer players more than any of our competition. I think as RFC fans we still see RFC a lot smaller than what it is. I know everyone’s got a mate with an opinion. But all my mates who are fans of other championship teams are worried about us being back and think we will dominate

Agreed - it's totally about the wage structure, nothing more to be said

FiNeRaIn wigan have had 3 now and still only manage to get unknowns that they pay well over the odds wages for.

Unknowns such as Heskey, Kirkland and Koumas?

Its all down to money. If you pay the wages the players will sign.
