Worst player you've seen at Reading

A few that I can think of from down the years...

Sheppard, Bodin, Van der Kwaak, Holsgrove, Brayson (you know a striker is poor when you see him racing away one on one with a keeper and don't even bother standing up because you know whats coming), Savage, Kebe.

I'd say Reilly but I either never saw him or erased him from my memory he was that poor.

In recent times, I remember some terrible players during our relegation season under Bullivant. There was a full back called Swain who was to defence what holes are to Gruyere cheese.

Am I the only one who tought Paul Bodin was pretty good?

Paul Bodin was the first person I ever saw score for Reading!

I have since been told he was awful!

I can't think of one stand out player as the worst player i've seen play for us, although an honourable mention must go to the south stand crossbar

All the years we've seen him and he's only had one brilliant game, and we lost!

Setting him aside, I used to loathe watching Ollie Kearns, a striker who hardly ever scored and never looked like doing so.

Actually he scored 40 goals in 86 games for us - not shabby by anybody's standards.

I remember him as missing hatfuls (usually sitters), but scoring plenty (his hat-trick against Aldershot was particularly pleasant). But he was a "Marmite player" and I loved him in our team (Even made a trip to Turf Moor to when he played for Hereford specifically to watch him - he scored a hat-trick in a 6-2 win)

Worst players I've seen? John Pratt, Martin James, Michael Barnes, Kim Sainsbury,Brian Bromley, Glenn Burville, Des McMahon, Eric Obinna, Mark Reilly..to name but a few.

Who said Rougier? Fair enough he went a long time without scoring, but what else didn't he do? In my view he was instrumental in the 2001/02 season, not to mention his late brace against Oxford. I think I realised how good Rougier was when it dawned on me that he wasn't about scoring goals, he was about creativity and being a real nuisance. Does anybody remember the match against QPR in 01/02 where he created 5 or 6 good chances and we only took 1 (which was enough)? If I remember properly his cross dribbled in off Hughes' shin.

No but I do remember him consistently falling over his own shadow numerous times. Hero for his performance against Oxford though.

Brayson was woeful IMO - Never gave any glimmer of hope that he could provide something to the squad at the time. At least Mass Sarr gave us that beautiful performance against Luton almost 10 years ago, even if he did fail to back it up. Andy Gurney was pretty atrocious too - If he put in 10 crosses a game, 9 would end up behind the goal.

Finally, Jason Bown. Simply awful.

He was good, but he could have been better, so in terms of disappointments he must be up there. I see some parallels with Rosenior, who has started well but a couple of below par performances are in danger of shattering his confidence.

A bit cruel to pick on Fleck, I think. He surely only managed a couple of games before injury ended his spell with us?

I'm horrified that Ollie Kearns has been mentioned - he was our star man (ish!) when I first went to Elm Park. We were 4th Div, and he was a 4th Div standard striker who managed to notch a few when we got promoted, so it seems harsh to pick on him as well.

I vote for Paul Bryason - never did a player look so completely and utterly out of their depth at a professional football club. Was he another thing we have to sadly blame Burns for? Can't quite remember.

Awful positional sense ... or maybe lack of understanding with team mates . Look at the results / match reports for the end of the 1997/8 season on this site. Enough to give you nightmares .... Maybe I'm being harsh on him though because the whole team was at a low ebb, and I've probably focussed on this season because of the Tommy Burns threads.

Fair point, he had been round the block a bit already. And definitely a fair point about expectations being too high - a real weakness of mine over the years. I was thinking more of how he seemed to start reasonably well (if memory serves).
