That Football Trivia Question

by Whore Jackie » 25 May 2008 19:55

Now that Hull have finally reached the Premier League, where's the largest city in Europe never to have had top-flight football?

Going with the UK and assuming it doesn't matter if you gained city status after your last time in the top-flight, that rules out Wolves. I don't believe Plymouth Argyle have gone any higher than their current level. Anyone know of a European (or indeed UK) city, bigger than Plymouth, smaller than Hull, that fits the criteria?

Don't know the answer to your question but I do know that had PSG not avoided relegation on the last day of the season then Paris would have been the only European capital without a team in the top division.

Wiesbaden, home of some German second division club. (SV Wehen Wiesbaden)

And there's a metric shitload of suitably sized Russian cities.

Milton Keynes may become the answer to this question sometime, depending.

A quick look at the last census data for Britain confirms that in England, it is Plymouth, followed by Dudley, then Bournemouth (which I do realise is not a city).

Wiesbaden is actually bigger than Hull, by the way.

The census does not recognise the term 'city' (or 'town' or 'village').

...and historically their team is historically far worse, and is currently at the equivalent of Ryman league level.

The team that currently plays in the Bundesliga 2nd division, SV Wehen Wiesbaden, used to play in a village a few miles outside the town until October, when a brand new stadium in Wiesbaden was built.

Bonn is actually bigger though (pop 315,000), and their team is and always has been rubbish

The term "city" is fairly meaningless though, isn't it. I mean, St Davids is a city and it's got a population about one tenth that of Lower Earley.

I don't deny that. I just pointed out that little fact about census data because it is my job to talk to people about the census every day of the week, so I know the ins and outs of how it's produced and what data is used. I hope I get a promotion elsewhere soon.... :)

Enough of all that irrelevant nonsense - the most important trivia fact about Hull City still applies.

They're the only English league team where you can't colour in any of the letters in their name.

Whilst on the subject of trivia, congratulations to Exeter who have come up to keep Crewe company in the "teams with an 'x'" catergory.

Is it correct that Harrogate is the largest town/city not to have a football league club? I seem to remember that being the answer of a trivia quiz I did years ago.
