Now that Hull have finally reached the Premier League, where's the largest city in Europe never to have had top-flight football?

Going with the UK and assuming it doesn't matter if you gained city status after your last time in the top-flight, that rules out Wolves. I don't believe Plymouth Argyle have gone any higher than their current level. Anyone know of a European (or indeed UK) city, bigger than Plymouth, smaller than Hull, that fits the criteria?

Don't know the answer to your question but I do know that had PSG not avoided relegation on the last day of the season then Paris would have been the only European capital without a team in the top division.

A quick look at the last census data for Britain confirms that in England, it is Plymouth, followed by Dudley, then Bournemouth (which I do realise is not a city).

...and historically their team is historically far worse, and is currently at the equivalent of Ryman league level.

The team that currently plays in the Bundesliga 2nd division, SV Wehen Wiesbaden, used to play in a village a few miles outside the town until October, when a brand new stadium in Wiesbaden was built.

Bonn is actually bigger though (pop 315,000), and their team is and always has been rubbish

I don't deny that. I just pointed out that little fact about census data because it is my job to talk to people about the census every day of the week, so I know the ins and outs of how it's produced and what data is used. I hope I get a promotion elsewhere soon....
