According to Wikipedia, Harrogate has a population of around 85,600 whereas Wakefield has about 76,000. Don't know if that makes it right, though.

Is Oxford not bigger than both?

Yes, but it was still in the League at the time I did the quiz!

St Helens was once the answer to the largest town without a league club. I don't know how true that is or ever was, nor indeed how relevant it is to anything.

I've never been to St Helens so I don't know how big it is.

Surely your first sentence implies that you require the answer to the question as things currently stand - otherwise "Was it correct" would have been the correct way to phrase the question...

The Surgeon of Crowthorne originally Is it correct that Harrogate is the largest town/city not to have a football league club? I seem to remember that being the answer of a trivia quiz I did years ago.

I think Sheshnu has come up with an answer that's more likely than Harrogate or Oxford - according to Wikipedia's assessment of those cities'/towns' populations, anyway.

York has a bigger population than St Helens.

soggy biscuit Don't know the answer to your question but I do know that had PSG not avoided relegation on the last day of the season then Paris would have been the only European capital without a team in the top division.

Given Hertha's relegation this season, Berlin can claim this dubious honour.
