Very good appointment, adaptation will be the only question for Scolari.

38 Premier League games and up to 13 Champs League games without ever taking your eye off the ball. Not an easy ask of anyone and only one manager since the inception of the PL has shown he can do it year in year out.

That's an *interesting* choice. Good international manager, though one could argue that winning the World Cup with Brazil is easier than with most other countries. Interesting to see how he'll adapt to European club management. Hope for Chelsea's sake that his teams football is as stylish on the pitch as they wish, because he's certainly no Mourinho off it.

From a neutral perspective, I'd have loved to have seen Mark Hughes given it.

Whilst he has a good track record at international level, you have to say its a very risky appointment. A risk a club like Chelsea probably dont have to take.

Not managed at club level in Europe EVER.
Doesn't speak English at all apparently.
Not exactly a spring chicken either. No guarantee he will be able to handle the day in day out stress of the job.

Also interesting that this is his 20TH appointment.

I can see this going tits up pretty quickly personally.

Hasn't he quit Portugal because he's fallen out with the people behind the scene?

Surly he's going to have problems with the Russian and the Dutch/Dane connection?

Just so many factors behind the scene at Chelsea right now.

It's an odd gamble, bringing in a man who's not been in European club football before, and hasn't managed any club for a few years.

Throw into that mix the fact he can't speak English, doesn't stick around anywhere for very long, and seems to be a bit of a hot head who likes to get his own way, and this doesn't sound like the receipe for a settled and successful future.

Showed an interview from a couple of days ago on SSN this morning and Scolari was speaking some English. Most of it was in Portuguese with a translator but he certainly answered a couple of questions in English.

Theres a real lack of quality managers available so it's no surprise Chelsea have gone for Scolari.

I don't really see what all the critisicm of Scolari is about.

Yes he hasn't managed a club in Europe before which could cause a problem but if he sets out an experienced team of coaches & staff to work with him then that may become irrelevant.

He has managed 2 different teams in Brazil to win the Copa Libertadores which is some achievment.

I think I would rather wait and see than slag him off now

He's a good manager, although as Grant showed that isn't good enough for Chelsea. You have to be the best of the best. Play superb football and win thing otherwise you'll be sacked.

Scolari turned England down because he couldn't handle the media attention. They'll be even more attention and pressure on him at Chelsea.

Not slagging him off myself, but I do think it's a bit of a gamble by Chelsea. It's a bit typical of the way the club is run though, look for the biggest fish and splash the cash to go and get it, even if it might not be best suited to the club.

I hope it goes spectacularly wrong for them.

No criticism, but when people start installing him as the best manager in the Premiership before he's sat down at his desk, you're bound to ask questions. Managing a top level European club is a unique job that very few people have done consistently well. For me the big issue is how quickly and regularly the big games come around and how easy it is to slip up on the non-big games. It's way different from international management where you have ages to sit around engaging in strategic planning and no wheeling and dealing in the transfer market. He's a tough guy, and I think he'll do OK - it won;t go tits up. But can he win a championship and the European Cup in one season? That's the measure of the best.

PS if that sounds a lot like our resident Man U apologists, believe me I'm far from that. If Scolari can make Chelsea an admirable, attacking team, I'm all for it.

Kitson4England

That was REAL bad. It doesn't even nearly rhyme.

Course it does if you pronounce Arsenal, Arsenil.
