sheshnu Better food in the concourse and better deals for us at Waitrose would make this possibly the best sponsor in history.

Unlike other major supermarkets, Waitrose isn't owned by shareholders and the City. Instead, as part of the John Lewis Partnership, it's owned by everyone who works for the Partnership. (That's why Waitrose staff are called 'partners'.) And every year they share the profits that would normally go to shareholders. As you would expect this produces an extraordinary high level of committment amongst those who work in our stores. A good proportion of our Partners have worked for Waitrose for many years - over 20 is not unusual. They're interested in what they do and they're knowledgeable about what they sell. And the friendliness and helpfulness that our customers so often remark upon isn't really surprising when you realise that the Partners you meet in your local Waitrose do, in effect, own the store.

ElmParker We may not be the world's biggest club, but surely we are now the world's most middle class club?

Row Z RoyalCMRoyal You can tell Waitrose is class because they say "8 items or fewer" not "8 items or less".
DG had a hand in the sponsorship deal, I'm sure.

Royal Rother You really could have predicted those who would find something / anything, however trivial, to be negative about the new sponsorship. It's a strange outlook to have.

Have to agree with you on this one - who would some people have preferred? And WTF does it matter?

I'm disappointed we didn’t hold out for Dorset Cereals or the Church of England.

Indeed the revolutionary proletariat would shoot us on sight (if it existed any more).

I'm looking forward to home-made fruitcake replacing the half-time pizza hand-out and, instead of t-shirts, pots of lemon curd being catapulted into the crowd.
