Vittek, Charisteas & Koller all gone. I will miss Vittek but the latter two ...

Pinola and Mintal are staying though and Rafael Schäfer is on his way back so there's some optimism here for German yo-yo club number one.

Naughty, naughty. Five Atalanta and Livorno players charged with match-fixing in respect of the fixtures between the two teams last season. Imho a blanket ban on Italian participation in Europe next season would be justified, but I don't see it happening.

Let's just been glad Italy has enough pride to admit their match fixing.

To be honest i think there is more justification for banning insolvent, corrupt clubs that are run by foreign criminals. Not that we have any clubs like that in the Premiership of course.

Livorno had numerous players banned after the Livorno Atalanta game on May 4 because they attacked the Atalanta player who scored the winner. Obviously he wan't in on 'deal'

Atalanta 3 - 2 Livorno
Doni 57 (A), Ferreira Pinto 60 (A), Rossini 65 (L), Pavan 80 (L), Padoin 89 (A)
Stadio Azzurri d'Italia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A last-gasp Simone Padoin lob broke Livorno's hearts and puts them with one foot in Serie B.

Bottom club Livorno needed an unlikely victory to keep their hopes of staying in Serie A alive and started out again under Coach Nando Orsi, who replaced Giancarlo Camolese this week. The Amaranto were without a win on their travels since January and lost Fabio Galante and Daniele De Vezze to bans. Atalanta have nothing left to play for and hadn't won in four, but welcomed Cristiano Doni back from suspension.

Martin Bergvold had some early attempts from distance, while Cristiano Doni's free kick flashed across the face of goal.

Francesco Tavano threaded through for Diego Tristan, but his angled drive was fingertipped just enough to allow Ferreira Pinto to clear. On 35 minutes Simone Pavan's header skimmed the upright.

Cristiano Doni's delightful lob opened the scoring for Atalanta and it was an emotional moment for the captain. With this goal he becomes the all-time top Serie A scorer in an Orobici jersey.

Moments later Ferreira Pinto doubled their lead with a fine solo run that squirmed under the goalkeeper's body.

Livorno got back into it as Coppola did well to deny Antonio Filippini, but could do nothing on the follow-up from former Atalanta striker Fausto Rossini.

The Amaranto fought back from 2-0 down to equalise 10 minutes from time as Simone Pavan nodded in an Alessandro Diamanti cross from the left.

However, Atalanta did not take their foot off the pedal and restored their lead in the final minute. A long goal kick bounced for Padoin to place a precise lob over Amelia. Livorno were furious and after the final whistle several players chased after Padoin to berate him for 'ruining' their chances of survival.

Messina are releagted from Italys Serie B due to financial reasons and could disappear altogether.

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jul14t.html

Messina were repreived of demotion from Serie A a couple of years ago after Juventus were demoted.

Personally, i think that demoting clubs 1 division that are not financially viable is a much more sensible option than the points penalties imposed in the Football League as with the Luton fiasco.

Messina have been a well supported club in the past. Their ground was a vanue for Italia 90.

Chaotic scenes in Italy outside Serie A as no less than 9 clubs go bust.

Castelnuovo, Spezia, Lucchese, Teramo, Massese, Martina, Torres, Nuorese and Messina are all out. All clubs have the possibility to start again from Serie D (Thats Conference level)

Avellino, Venezia, Treviso, Pescara, Scafatese, Potenza, Juve Stabia and 1985 Scudetto winners Verona have all been given the green light (although will all receive penalty points for late inscription).

An interesting way to start the season - 1.FCN's first game this season is the first round of the German Cup - tomorrow (against the team that knocked them out last year). An apt time to remember ...

As you will all no doubt know (ahem), 1.FCN needed penalties to win today but win they did.

Metz have won their first two matches since being relegated to Div 2.

Being a plastic, I did not go on Friday to see them beat Tours.
