Sarah Star You don't have to stay at the first club you're at to have loyalty.

Torres leaving Atletico was good for the club he still supports. From what he says, it sounds like he plans to go back there one day. But he chose to go to Liverpool and shows no sign of wanting to leave them in the near future. He also took a pay cut when he went to Merseyside.

When did Gerrard ever say he was leaving Liverpool?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 653041.stm

Seriously do you honestly believe Torres left Atletico because of loyalty to them?

OK, I didn't believe you about Gerrard but you're right. In his autobiography he says he did it because he wasn't sure they wanted to keep him. They, in return, thought he wanted to leave. The speculation didn't do his game any good, he says he was popping paracetamols and scored an own goal against Chelsea. When he finally did resign for Liverpool he made sure there was no escape clause that time.

As for Fernando Torres, this is a quote from FourFourTwo:

Q: For years you resisted the chance to leave Atletico, despite interest from some of the world’s biggest clubs. What finally made you change your mind?

A: There were lots of things. After years trying to be successful with Atletico, I saw that we just weren’t achieving that. I came to believe that the club needed a change, that I needed a change. It was the best moment for me to go. I was determined to achieve things that I thought Atletico couldn’t offer. It was a good moment for Atletico too: they could grow, get a lot of money for me and use that to build a team. I thought about it long and hard and I’m convinced I made the right decision.

I don't blame Shorey if he does go to Pompey as this would be a good move for him..Good club and great fans.

He is doing it so we make money and have the chance to grow as a club.

Shorey = Torres

Not quite. We don't want him to go and we don't make much money from it. But he has been loyal to the club for 7 years.

Little going wasn't wanted or expected.

Going back to the idea that Little and Shorey will spend much time on the bench at Pompey.
Shorey is seen at Pompey as a starter-Hreidarsson is thought to be too old and of course Nicky is English so with the foreigners' restrictions due to come in he would add to their English numbers.
Little won't be up to 90 minutes of Premiership football each week plus European games but he will be a great 20-30 minutes impact player as a sub.
At his time of life that's a good deal and he can go racing with 'arry who has been a bit lost since he used to go racing with Hartson.

Spot on.

For me I'd be happy to see Shorey go. He's had lots of great years with us and been fantastic, but he clearly wants out and I don't like his attitude these days. Definitely one to get shot of and try and move the club on.

Reading have already got the hump with me for leaving so I am not going to try to upset people saying he should go and sign for so and so.

 Did Nick(y) Hammond throw a little high-pitched strop?

I don't doubt he may have an affinity for Atletico but the highlighted bits suggest to me the main reason why he moved to Liverpool (Spanish manager might have helped too) when he did, the rest is just dressing to demonstrate he's a nice fella which i'm sure he is.

As most on here agree on Shorey doesn't want to stay, which was clear by his woefull performances last season. Obviously it's bad to lose one of your best players, but I'm more disappointed Coppell didn't have the brain to sell him last year and get decent replacement who wanted to play for the shirt. Now we're in the Championship this will prove far more difficult. Another feather in Coppell's hat.

nice 1 captain hindsight
that makes no sense-- shorey had always shown himself to be th econsumate professional in his previous many years at the club-would have been tough to predict the dip in form he suffered, and after sidwells performances in the same situation th eprevious year it would have been worth th egamble

nothing to do with coppells brain

Although oddly Scarface describes exactly what Coppell tried to do last summer !
Deal was done, subject to us signing a replacement and apparantly the deal to sign the replacement fell over at the last moment.
Luckily Coppell (Hammond ?) was smart enough to make the sale conditional on the replacement so we weren;t left with £4 million and a big gap at left back !

in which case coppells brain is proven to be tip top
and it was all due to a deal for a replacement falling though

Didn't the deal fall through because Coppell decided that he wasn't interested in Taylor in the end?

I don't think Scarface's point is just one using hindsight. In January we'd seen how poor Shorey was in comparison to his ability. That was the time to cash in and bring in a replacement.

have pompey lost interest?

It is a busy time at Stamford Bridge, with Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp closing in on the £5m signing of Chelsea and England left-back Wayne Bridge. (Daily Mirror)

This one was never going to happen. 'Arry has a definite policy to only go for big players. This was published back in April :
Sunday Times - Portsmouth may not be the best team in the Premier League, but they may well be the biggest because of a policy decision taken after Arsenal, of all people, had bullied and overpowered them. Harry Redknapp, the Pompey manager, regularly fields nine six-footers in his starting XI, and could make it 10 by reinstating 6ft 5in Kanu in attack

- Redknapp has always favoured attractive, passing football, but two years ago he realised that playing pretty football was no longer enough. His epiphany came when Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal visited Fratton Park and were too strong for Portsmouth’s lightweights

- ‘They were too powerful for us that day, they were all formidable athletes,’ Redknapp said. ‘I looked at Adebeyor, Diarra and Eboue, and thought ‘we’re not playing on equal terms here. I need to get some bigger lads in to make us stronger and more athletic’. We’re a massive team now, with Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin, Sulley Muntari and Papa Bouba Diop. Big Papa in midfield is 6ft 4in. I made the conscious decision to go for more power, which has given us a bit of steel’

- The improvement was particularly noticeable on their travels, where Portsmouth have won eight times already in the Premier League this season. ‘We’d been a soft touch away from home,’ Redknapp said. ‘I wanted to be sure we could go away and compete this time, and we’ve done that’

Such a shortarse as NS would obviously not fit into his gameplan, and would leave an obvious weakness in the Pompey defence.

Sounds like Harry Redknapp doesn't like losing to Arsenal. Good for him.

This explains why he made Glen "The Rock" Little his no.1 summer signing.
