Probably a long shot but Leighton Baines could be a good shout if he would drop a division. He hasn't had much of a sniff in at Everton and they seem to be trying to sign Mattock now so you never know...

He was injured for large parts of last season, HTH.

We have as much chance of signing Leighton Baines as Leyton Orient do of re-signing Nicky Shorey.

Did say it was a long shot  . Didn't realise he was injured, just thought he couldn't get a game. Back to scouring league two then...

Not strictly true, but it's the difference between a thousand to one and a million to one - i.e. practically equivalent.

Billy Jones from Crewe is usually a safe bet. Or you could just hope Golbourne comes good!

I was shouted down on this one a few weeks ago Bill.
It really comes down to how we are perceived now by the rest of the football world.
Are we a club that has had a one-off spell at the top level like a Barnsley or Swindon and are now selling our best players or are we a club that was only just relegated and is about to make a real challenge to get back up?
The early signings will show which we are and if it looks as though we are splashing some cash (like the good old 3rd division days)then other better class players might be tempted to join the band wagon.

Perhaps it's more likely that Everton sign Mattock but loan him out for a season?

With Baines and Lescott covering left back I can't see him getting more than a couple of games if he went to Goodison.

Samuel would be good at this level, and above if we ever got there again.

Not sure Bolton would be looking to offload him already though. He played a fair bit last season, but then he was a Sammy Lee signing and not one of Megsons own, so maybe a possibility.

Ian Harte has been released by Sunderland, and IMO would be an excellent short-term replacement for Shorey.

Might not be a bad shout on a free. He can certainly strike a ball, not sure if he's that great at defending though, which could be a bit of a problem, considering he's a defender and all...
