Keep Sidwell - cost £2m
Stay in premiership net proft £10m
Sell Sidwell to Villa for £5m
Job done?

No, your maths is wrong and misses out the fact that Sidwell wannted to leave anyway.

Chelsea pay Sidwell 2 million in salary for one year
Chelsea pay Sidwell 3 million for severing contract early

Vila pay off Chelsea Costs (not including legal/agent fees)

Now can this thread please be closed?

Even if we had offered the same money, I very much doubt he would have stayed. His choice to leave was not purely about money although that did have a role to play.

Quite apart from the fact that increasing Sidwell's wages would have increased the wages of most other players - so 2 million in salary times half a dozen other players - at least!

Although Sidwell originally 'only' wanted 25k per week..... and he was better value for that than Hunt who gets 25k per week.

If, buts and maybes...

Bottom line is Sidwell wasn't going to stay.

The missed trick was in the players brought in to replace him not doing the job, has anyone mentioned that ?

Why didn't we just exchange Sidwell for Barry last year....that would have saved him a whole season and Barry would have joined another huge Premiership Club.....

if we did pay sidwell the wages he wanted then all the other players will think its unfair and demand similar wage packets, which wouldnt be possible so it was good we got rid of him

This is the most ridiculous thread I've seen. We got Sidwell playing brilliantly for a season on Championship wages. He was instrumental to us finishing 8th, and had we originally sold him for £2mill or so it could have made a big difference, I'm talking relegation in 2007.

We missed a trick when we failed to replace him, instead promoting Gunnarrsson who wasn't a starter even back in the Championship.
