West Ham Financial Problems

by The 17 Bus » 18 Jul 2008 02:27

Cant find it online at the mo, but read about the owners in deep doggy doo due to the change in world markets, lost money hand over fist and basically cant afford to payroll the Hammers any more at this time, two players already gone, and more expected to follow to cut wages back sharply, seems all the TV money and 35-000 crowds is not enough to pay salaries of £50k a week.

Best i can do http://www.kumb.com/story.php?id=123418

Yeah I heard about this, something about Iceland going completely down the pan and the owners suddenly becoming not-quite-so-rich. I'm afraid I wasn't listening closely enough to a subject I didn't care about to be any more specific than that.

Still, if only they could keep Dyer fit, eh?

So are they going to fiddle the books and then the FA will let them off for the umpteenth time despite an outcry for them to be punished.

I think that deal was agreed when they won the World Cup.

Its no surprise really. They were offering players £70k a week weren't they?

Expect more over spending clubs, like Sunderland, to really suffer in years to come.

The economic downturn will bring some sanity back to football with any luck.

Thw wage structure is simply unmanageable for a club that doesn't even get European football. The club pulled out all the stops to survive in the Premiership after the Pardew sacking and spent big money and big wages on average players like Calum Davenport, Boa Morte and Quashie. Since, they've struggled with injuries but the squad numbers are too big for a Premier League club. Taken from wikipedia, squad list looks like;

1 GK Robert Green
2 DF Lucas Neill (captain)
3 DF George McCartney
4 DF Daniel Gabbidon
5 DF Anton Ferdinand
6 DF Matthew Upson
7 MF Fredrik Ljungberg
8 MF Scott Parker
9 FW Dean Ashton
10 FW Craig Bellamy
11 MF Matthew Etherington
12 FW Carlton Cole
16 MF Mark Noble
17 MF Hayden Mullins
18 DF Jonathan Spector
19 DF James Collins
20 MF Julien Faubert
21 GK Richard Wright
22 MF Tony Stokes
23 GK James Walker
26 MF Nigel Quashie
27 DF Calum Davenport
28 MF Kyel Reid
29 MF Lee Bowyer
30 DF James Tomkins
32 MF Kieron Dyer
34 MF Luís Boa Morte
35 DF Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson
39 MF Jack Collison
40 FW Freddie Sears
MF Bálint Bajner

Throughout the most of last year, they had Bowyer, Faubet, Dyer, Ljunberg all capable of playing on the right wing

Rob Green gave a strong interview in the press this morning, he has a fair point with regards the wages and there seems to be rumblings coming out of Upton Park, after the travel to the USA tour fiasco. Bookies have Curbs have favourite in the PL sack race, could be good value me thinks.

It would explain the lack of a bid for Shorey.

They have a history of financial gambling - never forget that if they'd bet literally everything on promotion - if they'd not won the Play-off final they'd have been in administration the following day, without a doubt.

Is there anyone who thinks that, were West Ham to be found guilty of exactly the same things that Luton have been punished for, they would be deducted 30 points?

:?

Can't really compare Sunderland to West Ham. Splashing the cash in players like Gordon and Jones is one thing. West Ham's problems come from signing average players like Neill or injury prone ones like Dyer and Bellamy on ridiculous wages.

Means exactly what it says.

West ham were in a financial mess in 2005. They didn't sell players to pay their debts, but instead kept them in the hope of promotion. They scraped in the play offs (relied on other results on the final day) and escaped Administration as a result. They basically gambled everything on promotion.

Amazing how things change on just one game. Leeds might be a decent prem side now had they won the play off final the following year, look at them now.

No, Ipswich's manager won the World Cup. And came close again 24 years later.

Not surmised, it was fact at the time. I used it to illustrate to some bods how ridiculous the 10 points deduction rule was.

That was the season when we came 7th and West Ham came 6th, and so got into the play-offs. If they'd lost their play-off semi-final, they would have had to go into administration very soon, and certainly before the next season, and so they would have had to have been deducted 10 points. That would have meant that their points total would have to gone down and they would no longer qualify for the play-offs - we would! Cue confusion and possible legal challenges, etc.....

I also have some very juicy rumours about why West Ham are happy to operate the way they do, financially, but I can't say!
