Ian Royal we've got bundles of centrebacks, playing him in midfield in a fitness excercise isn't hugely worrying IMO, in fact I find it rather promising. It suggests his passing, movement and awareness is potentially quite good.

A ball playing centreback is always useful.

Not seen much of Golbourne, any comments on him would be greatly appreciated.
Would he be a substantial replacement for Shorey? Or are we expecting us to (gasp) buy a replacement?

Karacan and Pearce have both had good feedbacks from other clubs' fans over on BBC 606.
Henry hasn't had such great reviews but still seems promising.

Out of our youngsters, though, i'd put Karacan into our squad to partner Marek should Harps leave. :?

The sensible choice seeing as Pearce, Golbourne, Henry and Robson-Kanu aren't central midfielders.

He's an academy player so in reply to the original question - no

We dont appear to have much faith in our academy, in terms of putting them in the first team - the management structure is the same, so I think it will be the same this season

Golbourne is injured and not due back to training until August.

SC has a huge dilemma. Do you try to recruit experienced players to fill the gaps or do you go with the Academy guys.

It is unlikely that we will get PL players to cone down unless we pay huge wages - not the Reading way.
We will not pick up Championship players because other clubs will not want to lose their best players unless we pay huge fees - again not the Reading way.
So either we look for league 1 and 2 players or cheap foreigners.

The question is are these going to be any better than out academy lads. Last season Henry, Pearce, Karacan and Robson-Kanu all did well on laon. Spence, Kelly and Sigurdsson are all highly regarded so why not give them a go.

If we are at least mid table by the end of December we will still have a chance of promotion and can always buy players to fill any gaps in January.

Don't forget that last season Palace only started to go up the table when Colin dropped his established players and filled the team with his Academy guys - who were young and hungry.

I would love to see some of those I have mentioned becoming a regular fixture in the first team.

The answer to the dilemma is a bit of both though isn't it?

You buy in a few players who are pretty proven at the level your playing at, and who hopefully have the potential to step up to the next level if you get there, and you pad out the squad with your youngsters so that the proven players don't break the bank.

Where we've gone wrong over the last couple of seasons is in blooding our youngsters sufficiently to really have an idea of how they're likely to step up when given the chance. That maybe because their time hasn't quite come or maybe because they're just not looking good enough.

One thing is for sure though, until they're given a chance here we'll never really know.

Yes except that SC has said he wants to reduce the first team squad from 24 to 18 or so and it still stands at 19 - even after the loss of Kitson so unless more go cannot see many coming in either. Clearly if say Harper, Shorey, Hunt and Lita all go we will need some more experienced players.

My squad cull:

Hunt
Harper
Duberry
Gunnarsson
Bennett
Sodje
Golbourne
Sonko
Fae
Andersen
Church
Hamer
Bozanic
Davies
Robson-Kanu
Illugason
Henry

This would then leave us with a squad of 16:

GKs: Hahnemann, Federici

FBs: Shorey, Murty, Rosenior

CBs: Pearce, Bikey, Ingimarsson

WMs: Convey, Kebe

CMs: Matejovsky, Karacan, Cisse

CFs: Doyle, Lita, Long

This is a tight squad but one with no real visible weak links if I'm being fair to Karacan, Rosenior and Cisse.

Bring in a top class winger, a decent full back as cover for Shorey and a quality defensive midfielder if Cisse or Karacan aren't up to it and we'd be alright when you consider both Cisse and Bikey can play midfield or central defence if required. Add a centre forward who can play the Kitson role and we'd be sorted and that would only take us up to 20 players - cover for internationals and injuries without having too massive a squad, plus the average age looks healthy.

Of course Coppell won't do anything like this though.

I'm touched.

I'm as much in favour of blooding youngsters as anyone, I just feel that given where some of them have been out on loan and haven't received the glowing reviews they'd need to be able to make the step up, they're not really worth keeping on the wage bill. Henry faded at Bournemouth and didn't do anything at Norwich for example and Andersen got poor reports at Torquay.

If they're not doing it at this stage then I don't feel confident in them suddenly being good enough to play a part in a team pushing for promotion in the Championship - we'd be better off freeing up some wages for player who'll actually be of use in the first team.

Go to Maidenhead or Basingstoke, I presume Andersen will be playing, it's worth going for a laugh if nothing else.

Is he up to Simon Shepherd's levels of goalkeeping excellence? I reckon it's the blonde hair.

A 6'6 goalkeeper who sticks to a line better than Halford.

Some (usually reliable) Dane told me Andersen was alright, and he looked good in the reserves and u-18s. I was quite suprised when I heard he was playing badly at Torquay. Having said that, didn't he only play two games for you?

Karacan seems to be talked about as a DM a lot, he's quite attacking- I wouldn't use him as a DM, that's for sure. His shooting is pretty good, but unless we sell Marek and Harper he's not likely to get a game in his preferred position.

rhroyal He seems to be having an alright pre-season, and he really impressed at Millwall in League 1 last season. Do you think he'll have a significant role in our first team this season?

I like the look of Karacan. Puts himself about, retains possession well by playing the simple ball, he looks a busy and efficient player. There is something there I think. What with him, Pearce and possibly Henry the academy picture isn't quite as gloomy as it might be.

He's a good all round all action midfielder.

Not dissimilar to Sidwell in in that respect really.
