Why is it our 2 joint record signings, (Fae and Halford) are absolute dump? Is this why RFC seem reluctant to spend over a million pounds on a player because they invariably turn out to be a steaming pile of horse shite?

The progressive tranfer record, as far back as I can remember is something like:

In

Terry Hurlock £85,000
Keith Curle £150,000
Steve Moran £250,000
Craig Maskell - £250,000
Lee Nogan - £250,000
Darren Caskey - £750,000
Carl Asaba £800,000
Martin Bulter £800,000
Bobby Convey £800,000
Leroy Lita - £1m
Greg Halford - £2,5m
Emerse Fae £2.5m

Out
Neil Webb £87,500
Kerry Doxon £175,000
Trevor Senior - £325,000
Simon Osborn - £1.1m
Shaka Hislop - £1.575m
Greg Halford - £2.5m
Dave Kitson - £5.5m

Yes. So we resort to dirt cheap Irish players who we hope will be a success.

From Despair To Where? The progressive tranfer record, as far back as I can remember is something like:

In

Terry Hurlock £85,000
Keith Curle £150,000
Steve Moran £250,000
Craig Maskell - £250,000
Lee Nogan - £250,000
Darren Caskey - £750,000
Carl Asaba £800,000
Martin Bulter £800,000
Bobby Convey £800,000
Leroy Lita - £1m
Greg Halford - £2,5m
Emerse Fae £2.5m

Out
Neil Webb £87,500
Kerry Doxon £175,000
Trevor Senior - £325,000
Simon Osborn - £1.1m
Shaka Hislop - £1.575m
Greg Halford - £2.5m
Dave Kitson - £5.5m

I think the Osborn - Meaker deal was announced as £1.1m, but this later turned out to be £850k for Osborn, £250k for Meaker. That puts Meaker as joint record signing in for a while, of course.

Clauses for 3 million? You must be joking, it's fortunate that Sunderland can't sue us!

At £20,000 Steve Death was our record signing from 1970 until 1979 and is still probably the best value record signing we've ever had.

In 1979 that record was finally broken twice in quick succession by Hugh Cheethan (£25,000) and David Shipperly (£50,000) both would turn out to be flops though due to injury problems (for the record we also broke the £20,000 mark for a 3rd time that year when, after Dave Shipperly had signed, Roger Joslyn joined for £40,000)

Our next record signing was Terry Hurlock at £87,500 in 1986 who was a partial success but Ian Branfoot flogged him within a year to Millwall.

After that was;

Keith Curle £150,000 - success
Steve Moran £250,000 - flop
Craig Maskell £250,000 - partial success
Lee Nogan £250,000 - success
Michael Meaker £550,000 - flop
Darren Caskey £700,000 - success
Carl Asaba £800,000 - flop
Bobby Convey £900,000 - partial success, injury will determine whether he is a succes or flop
Leroy Lita £1m - partial success so far
Greg Halford £2.5m - flop
Emerse Fae £2.5m - flop

Contrary to some opinion I do not believe Martin Butler was ever a record signing as I think he cost £750,000 which is 50 grand less than the £800,000 we'd already shelled out for Carl Asaba.

Overall our record signings have a tendancy to not work out for the best so perhaps its better to keep well within those boundaries!

Surely Seol at £1.5M should be between Lita and Halford.

Butler's cost depends on whether you choose to use just the up-front fee or the total amount paid (including add-ons we end up paying)

You say that... but we've had 6 signing that were a success or partial success so far and 5 that flopped, so they haven't got a tendency not to work out, its just a complete lottery which ones that do. and thats just after Steve Death, who was the greatest success ever for the price payed, then 2 more flops and one more success before the figures up there ^^^

Arrgghhhhh! my eyes!

Asaba may have been a flop, but he was given one season in a team playing piss poor and still finished top scorer iirc. Then he was sold from under us when he could have made a huge impact at the lower level. Instead we got in Steve Fleck and Keith Scott.
