The non-league thread 2008/9

by Jerry St Clair » 04 Aug 2008 10:43

Anyone else going to the season openers this Saturday?

I'll be heading for the Camrose to watch the 'stoke take on last season's beaten play-off finalists Hampton and Richmond. Can't see past an H&R win as the 'stoke are still in a state of flux after last season's management merrygoround.

Here we go again, was hoping not to be posting on this thread this year but alas! United start away at Histon where last year there were 9 goals (5-4 Utd) 3 penalties and 2 sendings off! including a 94th minute winner as well.

Aldershot's absence will be temporary this season. Normal service will resume next season.

are you saying that aldershot will play in different league tiers during the coming season? i hope beyond all hope that reading avoid another relegation(something aldershot have never experienced) and that said shot's do not get promoted.....mind you,a local derby for the first time involving the clubs in a competitive fixture may be fun.

Then in that case SRRC in the Reading Saturday Division One play at Lower Whitley Rec - they are closer than Reading Town

Yes the former and the latter are easily good enough. Maiders is always good fun.

Plus the easiest to get to from Reading - hop on the train, 15mins later you're at Maiders and then a quick 5min walk and you're at the ground. Where i used to work it overlook the ground - its a tidy little non league stadium.

Look out for a fat bloke with a Whitley accent wearing a pink shirt supporting H&R.

Maidenhead sounds alright - easy to get to etc. Ideally i want to jump on a bandwagon, early doors.

PlasticRoyale Where is the most local non-league team to Reading?

Nearest 10 (in approx. distance from the Mad Stad) are as follows:-

Little Drummer Boy's lot = 4 miles [STEP05 Hellenic Premier]
Finchampstead = 9 miles [STEP06 Hellenic 1 East ]
Wokingham & Emmbrook 9 miles [STEP06 Hellenic 1 East]
[Shiny new ground @ Cantley Pk]
Tadley Calleva = 10 miles [STEP06 Wessex 1]
AFC Aldermaston = 11 miles [STEP06 Wessex 1]
Hartley Wintney = 11 miles [STEP05 Combined Counties Premier]
Binfield = 12 miles [STEP06 Hellenic 1 East]
Bracknell = 13 miles [STEP04 Southern 1 South-West]
Maidenhead Town = 16 miles [STEP02 Conference South]
Holyport = 17 miles [STEP06 Hellenic 1 East]

The nearest STEP01 (Conference National) club are our friends from the Kassam :wink: and STEP03 : Farnborough (Southern Premier) (16 miles)

All fairly academic since none of the above are at home this Sat (except Tadley and I don't think their bar is open yet - one of many reasons they weren't promoted last season though they won the league by miles)

If anyone is mad/sad/desperate enough (like me :oops: ) for a footy fix this Sat. then the nearest games (all 15:00h KOs) are @ :-

Alton Town v Moneyfields (Wessex Premier)
Basingstoke v H&R (already mentioned)
Cove v Bookham (Combined Counties Premier)
Farnborough North East v Warminster Town (Wessex 1)
Sandhurst v Banstead (Combined Counties Premier)

... I confess I've already been to all these so I'll be 'hopping' just a bit further afield. 8)

..... Anorak back on peg now......

1-1 at the Camrose. Good game played in an absolute monsoon in the second half.

Highlight of the day was the woman running the burger van who had her baby in a cot sat in the counter whilst she served customers.
