SpaceCruiser £2m is far too cheap for Shorey - we'll never get a decent replacement for him with that money! I'd rather we kept him until January than sell him too cheaply.

I agree, as poor as he was last year, I still think he'd be a better player than any £2m player we could bring in. And if we're to go for Gibbs at Arsenal or Mattock at Leicester the fee's asked will be around the £2.5m I would've thought based on potential and U21 exposure.

Is there anything between your eyes?

If we get £20m for him, Coppell will still only have £1m at the very most to use for a replacement.

Anyway, back to cloud cookoo land.

is that the same land where Reading pay a hundred grand + for players who become the best players we have ever had and sell for millions.

i love that land.

Great if we get one or two of them now and again, yes. We're in desperate need of new left back that can slot straight into the team. Now, not in 12 months or 3 years.

It's unlikely we'll find another 'gem' like Doyle who can come straight in a set the world alight.

So how much would you get for him in January? £1.5 or less? Doofus.

I think it'd be worth £1m to have him play for us in the first part of the season if he'll play well enough to prove to the Premiership clubs that he's worth the money they'd spend on him. Better to have that than let him go cheaply and have an inferior left back play for most of the season.

Listen ButtCrusier, he sulked all season last year because his move to West ham was knocked back. Do you really think that he'll raise his game at Championship level knowing he will leave the club next summer for free based on reputation alone?

My point mainly was you indication that the higher the fee we get for Shorey, the more money we will use to replace him, which isn't and wont be the case anyway!

No matter what he goes for, the amount we'll use to replace him will be a small portion of the money in.

Yadda yadda.

Point is, £2,3,4m in and we'll still spend peanuts on a replacement if we do at all.

That's what you believe. It won't necessarily be that.

I notice today that Ian Harte, who was released by Sunderland and who had impressed during a 3 week tiral at Wolves, turned down their offer of a month to month contract.

The guy is 30, an ex international who has bags of experience and is available on a free.

Seems like a ready made LB replacement.

At this level, yes please. And a decent free kick taker!

Well worth a 12 month deal similar to that of Chris Makin when he arrived here.

At least we might score a few penalties.

I'd be highly surprised to see us spending anything more than £800k on a replacement.

To be honest with the way he played last season, would we really miss him?

"Keegan remains in the market for a left-back and, having so far failed to prise Stephen Warnock from Blackburn Rovers, could yet turn to Reading's Nicky Shorey. Shorey is also wanted by Sunderland, who have had a £4.5m bid for his services rejected by Reading but may return with a higher offer, mindful that Portsmouth and Aston Villa have also shown an interest." The Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008 ... ale.napoli

but

"SUNDERLAND and Aston Villa have had bids accepted for Reading left-back Nicky Shorey.

The £4.5million-rated star has been hoping for a move following the Royals’ relegation from the top flight.

Black Cats boss Roy Keane will try to tempt him north while Shorey could link up with old Reading team-mate Steve Sidwell at Villa."

A bidding war can only be good for us - as long as it's resolved quickly!

I find it amazing that all these Prem clubs, who are without the services of a decent left back, haven't already come calling for Shorey. Do they not actually rate him ?
