Sarah Star
Alan Partridge I would take anyone quite literally, where is Rufus Brevett these days?

'LEft backs are hard to come by'

Well there are 92 professional league teams and 24 more in the Blue Square Premier. Each of them have a left back (well apart from 1) and in some cases shock horror 2 or maybe even 3!

So there is a starting ground of around 115 clubs you could try and approach Steve, anything else I can help you with?

But if they're worse at it than Stephen Hunt, what's the point in signing them?

We need to have cover and competition for all places in the team.

At the moment our options on the left are pretty limited. Any injuries, suspension or poor form will hit us hard.

It's all about making the whole side, and the whole squad stronger, not just left back. The idea that there isn't an available left back better than Hunt is not very realistic anyway.

Can't we play Pearce or Ivar or someone, a defender at left back?

Hunt is an asset going forward, he is wasted in defence.

GEEZ!!!!

So, do I take it that we'd play him in preference to Stephen Hunt if he was fit?

So, total options for Left back without signing anyone else are:

S Hunt, Golbourne, Rosenior, Kelly, (Pearce?)?

I know it was only a friendly and a number of other substitutions rendered the whole set-up of the team skew-whiff, but the Kelly/Rosenior option looked seriously off-balance against Villa. The way forward has to be to get a specialist left back in.

Have you ever watched the way we play Jay?

Our fullbacks have to be able to get forward and help create as well as defend. Playing a centre half there just won't do.

Hunt may actually be better cut out to be a left back than a winger - lots of energy, terrier-like in the tackle, not particularly gifted on the ball and can't cross, but covers a lot of ground. Obviously, it would be better if he'd spent the last, say, ten years honing his LB skills.

Even if Hunt turns out to be a brilliant left back, the facts are that are midfield is weaker without hunt in it. His energy, pace & work rate will be instrumental to how our midfield performs this season and I would have his second best position as a central midfielder.

Given that we have at least 2 decent central defenders I don't think it would be that hard to find a solid left back in the Reading price range.

It's Graham Alexander, he will not only solve the problem at left-back but also will also prove to be an effective penalty taker for the club.

You forget Convey who has played there before - and also for the US team I believe.

Not strong enough in the tackle.

Convey was for a while the first choice US left back. I know he's not strong in the tackle, but neither is Shorey - and I honestly think Convey would do a job there.

Convey at left back? No thanks...We all know he is too light weight.

Lets just see how Hunty does at left back in front of the home crowd.
