Anyone got a feel for the way Saints fans feel about Surman and the possibility of losing him, always a good sign of how useful a player actually is or not...

THe ones I have read comments from are not that bothered and he apparently has not played well since his U21 call up. The do however say that he does have a very good range of passing and is the only player in their squad who can shoot straight. Lightweight and slow are two of the negative comments.

Sounds like most of our £2.5 million signings then. Apart from the shooting straight bit.

If you read the comments on here about Harper you would think he was cr@p, but he would be a useful addition to most Premier teams.

Unfortunately the most vocal supporters, for any team, seem to be those that just want to put their team/players down and they seem to multiply when a player might be about to jump ship.

Norfolk Royal
Cookie The Royals, in search of a left back after the sale of Nicky Shorey to Aston Villa, are set to stump up around £2.5m to try and tempt cashstrapped Saints into selling.
Reading director of football Nicky Hammond was sat in the front row of the Saints side of the directors' box for the 2-1 loss to Birmingham.

He's a good footballer no doubt. But midfielder converted to left back just to help his beloved Saints, who have asset stripped their squad. Do me a favour!

Reminds me a bit of the Scott Murray transfer, he was too fond of Bristol City to settle in Berkshire. Too far away you see.

Surman loves his home club way too much to settle up here in the Thames Valley.

What a load of cock.

I guess you're referring to the italicised comment?

My reliable source informs me that we did submit a bid for Surman but withdrew it after watching him on Saturday against Birmingham!

Sounds a bit strange I know.

The banks would force Southampton to sell at around £2m.

I find it weird that we would withdraw a bid after watching him play one match.

Probably a hard-learned lesson from Halford.

Signing Surman to play left back would be a mistake, I feel - it's not his most effective position.

Also, rumours that Ian Harte is training at Southampton after he rejected a deal with Wolves. Hmmm.

Nicky Hammond comfirms he was at Southampton on Saturday :

"It’s not too many. I watched Birmingham last Saturday. They have five strikers – and four of them were on the pitch."

No it isn't too many but I bet they have at least one left back.

Maybe Hammond was there to see how a team copes with five strikers and it's got nothing to do with Surman ... ? :D

I agree but totally trust my contact there. He did say that he played poorly.

The plot thickens! Maybe Harper was the deal that collapsed?

That's it then, we won't be getting him now.

I see "Sorry Saints" have just signed Chelsea defender Jack Cork on loan till Jan 1st ...
Cork can play anywhere across the back and midfield ... and if they also have Ian Harte training with them could be something might still be on ...

Harper is better than surman in the midfield, i would defy anyone of the Harper knockers to disagree with that!
