Set Pieces

by West Stand Man » 27 Aug 2008 12:26

Now that Shorey is no more, who have we got to provide a realistic threat from set pieces in the shooting gallery just outside the penalty area? Convey has been able to deliver on occasion (but his tenure as a starter seems to be limited once Armstrong frees Hunt to move into midfield) and Harper has taken the odd one. Other than that we don't really have any threat, so far as I can tell, so maybe there is a vacancy waiting to be filled by someone with the ability to curl in a long shot to order?

Maybe if we don't have a decent free kick taker Lita will stop throwing himself on the floor near the the box..............

May sound crazy, but maybe if James Henry can push for a starting place(unlikely), he can put a nice cross over as we all saw at last night's game(Luton).

It isn't the crosses that would concern me, we have plenty of people who can do that. It is the direct free kicks where I see a vacancy waiting to be filled. You (I) always felt a confidence in Shorey stepping up to take those, and there was always an expectancy about the moment. The only one of the current squad who I have seen realistically testing the keeper in that type of situation is Convey. Harper might be capable, but then we are running short of ideas

We have very few players that can deliver a decent cross from a set piece, let alone shoot. As for those around the box in shooting range, I'd expect to see the Hunts over them, probably Harper as well. Henry has a very good set piece but is unlikely to feature much.

Personally I'd love to see Bikey have a go, could you imagine being in that wall...

Hunt already has 3 asssists this season from corners, so I don't see that as a problem. Henry's corners and free kicks (from wide areas) also looked good last night. As for shooting from set pieces, I'd like to see Marek try to prove that his wonder strike at Anfield wasn't a one off.

remind me how many goals have been scored from set pieces aleady???!!! I do agree with an earlier poster though that its the dead ball free kicks that we are not so hot on now that shorey has gone.

We've scored several because SHunt has got his crosses spot on. Just because we've got one, maybe two who can put it on the spot doesn't mean we have more than a few

I despair.

This thread is quite clearly about direct free kicks not indirect ones, yet the discussion is veering off to 'who can cross a ball'.

The issue is not how we take all free kicks, just those that Shorey could be counted on to take, and to worry the keeper.

Henry has a great shot on him, and he's scored the odd free kick for the reserves. If he's not in the team I feel Bikey and Marek could do it, as could S Hunt if needed. Convey scored a free kick or two when we went up, what about him?

See my earlier comment. He could do it - but only if he is still playing, and the likelihood appears to be that he will be ousted by S Hunt.

Realistically, I can only see SHunt taking our free kicks.
He takes our corners, some of our FKs and most penalties.

Although personally, I could see Marek being one to fear in a dead-ball situation.

Harper has a decent shot on him and is already involved in freekicks so is the obvious choice. Marek may have potential.

SHunt is likely to be involved, but I can only see him blasting it at the wall. Convey was a less good Shorey, but may struggle to play as mentioned with Armstrong now in.

Kebe? LOL
