Royals smash woeful Wednesday for six

HAT-TRICK hero Kevin Doyle scored his second treble in the space of three games as Reading demolished Sheffield Wednesday with embarrassing ease to maintain their 100% home record.
Their six-goal demolition of woeful Wednesday equalled their biggest ever win at the Madejski Stadium - the 6-0 thrashing of West Ham in the Premeir League on New Year's Day 2007.
And for Doyle it will rank among his most unfortgettable nights having scored the first hat-trick of his professional career in Reading's last home game - a 4-2 win over Crystal Palace.
Doyle's display capped a terrific all-round display from Steve Coppell's patched-up side who completed their stunning victory with a Noel Hunt brace on his full league debut and another goal from Andre Bikey.
After the club's recent struggles away from home it was also an occasion for Royals fans to savour - and Wednesday supporters to forget.
The display harked back to the vintage performances of three seasons ago when Reading won the Championship title with a record 106 points.
This season, though, has been one of transition, and only Reading's 100% home record had kept Coppell's men in touch with the early Championship pacesetters.
While their troubles on the road showed little sign of ending last Saturday in a 2-0 loss at Ipswich, it was a different matter at the Madejski Stadium where they had seen off Plymouth and then Palace with comfortable ease.
But there were a couple of casualties from the weekend's defeat. Andre Bikey started in place of Ivar Ingimarsson who was ruled out with a stomach illness while Noel Hunt was preferred to Shane Long up front, handing the £600,000 Dundee United signing his first league start.
The untried pairing of Bikey and teenager Alex Pearce in central defence was a possible cause concern. With Michael Duberry also injured there was even a rare place on the bench for Sam Sodje with Coppell's resources stretched to the full.
But it was Wednesday who looked ragged at the back - and it cost them TWICE in the opening nine minutes.
Liam Rosenior made a great run down the right, squeezed the ball through to Noel Hunt who unselfishly helped it into the six yard box where Doyle arrived to clip it past Lee Grant on five minutes.
And just four minutes later Doyle plundered his second of the night and fifth of the season after yet more comical Wednesday defending.
The visitors had time to clear the danger when Jimmy Kebe lost posession but Doyle picked up the scraps and beat Grant from 12 yards with a shot that deflected off Tony McMahon.
`You might as well go home,' sang the Royals faithful. And it nearly came to that on 15 minutes when Stephen Hunt's cross was narrowly headed over by Doyle.
It looked as though it couldn't get any worse for Brian Laws' shellshocked visitors. Them, just as they ganied a foothold in the game, Reading scored a third on the half-hour mark.
A wreckless challenge on Noel Hunt gave the hosts a free kick just outside the box, big bother Stephen whipped it in and Bikey rose above the flat-footed Wednesday defence to plant an unstoppable header past Grant for his first of the campaign.
Royals looked in a different class to their lacklustre opponents. But they couldn't afford to switch off and they required a superb save by Marcus Hahnemann to deny Reading-born Deon Burton and preserve their three-goal cushion.
But it was nothing more than a token gesture in a first-half competely dominated by Coppell's men who threatened a fourth in the 37th minute when Noel Hunt's header was kept out by Grant.
Laws was so furious with his players he sent them out early for the second-half. But within 18 minutes of the restart Reading had plundered another three.
Coppell's side went route-one in the 50th minute when Doyle flicked Hahnemann's punt into Noel Hunt's path and the Irishman held off a challenge before slotting the ball under Grant's legs for his first Championship goal in a hooped shirt.
The trademark somersault followed - but there was more magic to come from the rampant Royals.
The outstanding Doyle completed his second professional hat-trick in the 62nd minute when he collected a Chris Amrstrong cross, danced past two defender then unleashed a ferocious drive from 15 yards that gave Grant no chance.
Coppell immediately took off Doyle and Stephen Hunt to give them a rest. The Royals boss had seen enough - and so had the Wednesday fans who were leaving in their droves just as Royals bagged a sixth in the 63rd minute..
Bobby Convey had only been on the pitch a matter of seconds when he burst down the left and crossed for Noel Hunt who drilled the ball into the bottom corner for his second.
Hunt then showed a different facet of his game with a pin-point cross that substitute Shane Long headed against the post. By then it was immaterial.

Nice to see Kelly getting a few more minutes and experience.
Coppell is certainly blooding the youngsters this season. I fully expect Henry to get a few leagues at some point and he's a certainty for the cup games.

Republic of Ireland international Doyle, who scored three goals in the Royals' 4-2 victory over Crystal Palace prior to the international break, struck twice inside the opening nine minutes before completing his treble just after the hour mark.
In between, Andre Bikey celebrated his first start of the season with a goal and Noel Hunt marked his recall to the side with a brace.
It might have been a different story had Etienne Esajas' low, driven free-kick whistled past the opposite side of the post instead of going narrowly wide in the fourth minute.
Doyle's first goal arrived immediately after following industrious work by Noel Hunt on the right-hand side.
He crossed low into the six-yard box where Doyle arrived to sidefoot the ball past the helpless Lee Grant.
Wednesday had a chance to hit back straight away but after beating the offside trap, Jermaine Johnson had the ball snatched from his feet by Marcus Hahnemann as he attempted to round the American goalkeeper.
It would prove a costly miss as Doyle doubled Reading's advantage with the Royals' next attack.
Doyle linked up with Jimmy Kebe on the edge of the area but as Kebe tried to return the ball to the Irishman a second time, it was intercepted by a Wednesday defender.
However, it ricocheted into Doyle's path and he struck a deflected shot into the roof of the net from 12 yards.
Reading continued to look threatening and inevitably scored a third goal to all-but put the game beyond the Yorkshire side.
Stephen Hunt's inswinging free-kick from midway inside the Wednesday half was directed back across goal by Bikey. Grant got a hand to the ball but could only help it into the far corner.

SkySports.com Kevin Doyle's second successive hat-trick helped Reading to an emphatic 6-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at the Madejski Stadium.
Doyle grabbed a treble against Crystal Palace at the weekend and he grabbed another three as Reading proved far too good for Wednesday.
Seems they're every bit as eager as the rest of us to forget the intervening flopola.

Steve Coppell claims he never doubted Kevin Doyle's commitment to Reading after he failed to gain a dream move back to the Barclays Premier League during the January transfer window.
The Republic of Ireland striker had a frustrating afternoon in the 2-0 defeat at Ipswich last Saturday but was back to his best last night after scoring his second hat-trick for Reading in three games.
Doyle was linked with Aston Villa, Sunderland and Tottenham on deadline day. But Coppell is just relieved to have the striker still in his team after watching Reading hit Wednesday for six and move up to fourth in the Championship.
'If you put yourselves in his shoes, he was very close to going, so all he can do is play,' said Coppell. 'He's in an environment where he's very much wanted.
'We've got to make sure we get the most out of him and that goes for the rest of them.
'Not intentionally, some players would have reacted to not going but he's very matter of fact and I knew him staying was never going to be a problem.'
League debutant Noel Hunt set up Doyle for an easy tap-in to get his new strike partnership with the Republic of Ireland forward off to the perfect start.
Doyle lashed the ball into the net via a deflection off Tony McMahon four minutes later following woeful Wednesday defending. Defender Andre Bikey then stepped up to make it 3-0 on the half-hour mark after meeting Stephen Hunt's 30-yard free-kick with a towering header.
Doyle then headed on for Noel Hunt to slot home in the 50th minute for his first Championship goal.

And Royals boss Coppell struggled to explain this emphatic reaction to the defeat by Ipswich at the weekend.
He said: “Sometimes you just don’t know where it comes from, you really don’t.
“We prepare the same way for every game yet sometimes you just see a spark like that — for whatever reason.
“It’s difficult for me to put my finger on why and comparing that to Saturday’s 2-0 loss is like chalk and cheese.
“But whatever it was, long may it continue.”

Coppell added: “I never worried about his attitude. With some players, there might have been a reaction when the window closed but he is a matter-of-fact guy and that was just the way it was.

“Kevin was close to going but he is wanted here and we will do our best to ensure he’s as productive as he can be.”
Doyle could hardly have been more productive against a Wednesday side reeling from a nightmare journey south.
The Owls were stuck in two motorway pile-ups and were forced to snack on service station food at lunchtime.
They were then given another bellyful by Doyle and Co.
Laws admitted: “It was hardly the best preparation but we can’t blame the coach driver, can we?
“I’d like to say Reading played like Real Madrid but 50 per cent of that performance was down to us.
“We gifted them two early goals and our reaction was panic. Reading smelt it.”

It might have been a different story had Etienne Esajas’ low fourth-minute free-kick whistled past the opposite side of the post instead of going narrowly wide.
Doyle’s first goal arrived immediately after when he sidefooted home past the helpless Lee Grant from Noel Hunt’s cross.
Wednesday had a chance to hit back but, after beating the offside trap, Jermaine Johnson had the ball snatched from his feet by goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann. It would prove a costly miss as Doyle doubled Reading’s advantage with his side’s next attack.
Doyle linked up with Jimmy Kebe on the edge of the area but as Kebe tried to return the ball to the Irishman a second time, it was intercepted by a Wednesday defender. However, it ricocheted into Doyle’s path and he struck a deflected shot into the net from 12 yards.
Noel Hunt scored his first goal of the night five minutes into the second half when he slid the ball under the advancing Grant from a long clearance.
Doyle completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute with a shot into the bottom corner from just inside the area.
Two minutes later Noel Hunt fired a low shot into the net to make it six.
Laws said: “We left Sheffield at 8am and didn’t get to Reading until 3pm, and that showed. We hit accidents and sitting it out on a coach for seven hours isn’t great. I don’t want to use too many excuses but that was a major factor.”

Coppell is certainly blooding the youngsters this season. I fully expect Henry to get a few leagues at some point and he's a certainty for the cup games.
Particulary liked how he knocked the ball past his marker and bulleted down the right. Very Gilkes I thought, and nice to see that pace.

Daily Mail Steve Coppell claims he never doubted Kevin Doyle's commitment to Reading after he failed to gain a dream move back to the Barclays Premier League during the January transfer window.
Mail down to it's usual low standards, I see.

Anyone got feedback from Sheffield Wednesday fans, like to understand how bad they thought Wednesday were and whether it was Reading imposing their game made them look so poor.

READING 6 v SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0: SHEFFIELD Wednesday are licking their wounds today following an embarrassing 6-0 defeat against Championship title contenders Reading last night.
It may well have taken them seven and a half hours to navigate their way down to Berkshire, but the journey back to the Steel City will have felt like a lifetime.
A hat-trick for Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle was complemented by Noel Hunt's brace and Cameroon defender Andre Bikey's header.
Owls' goalkeeper Lee Grant also made two fine saves from headers in each half, while sub striker Shane Long hit the bar.
Wednesday, who have now conceded 11 goals in their three away games, drop down to 13th in the table.
Owls fans join in takeover talks
The Royals have won each of their three home games, and Owls' manager Brian Laws said: "You can't come to Reading knowing that their home form is electric, they have been superb.
"If you are going to defend like that, you are going to concede goals. I would like to put it all down to how fantastic Reading were, they were like Real Madrid. But 50 percent of it was down to the fact that we were that poor."
The major consoling factors from the game are that Reading are genuine title material, not just promotion hopefuls. And in 24 year-old Doyle, Wednesday came up against arguably the best striker outside the Premiership.
"In this division he is always going to be a handful," continued Laws. "He is scoring goals. His reputation was built in the Championship, but he has also scored goals in the Premiership.
"He is a goal threat, but you can't give opportunities like that. You can't defend like that against a good finisher. He must have enjoyed that because it was like shooting practice for him."
After last night's match Reading boss Steve Coppell admitted that his prize asset nearly left the Madejski in the most recent transfer window. Doyle was rumoured to be interesting Aston Villa.
He opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Noel Hunt teed him up inside the six yard box following lax defending from two visiting players, including James O'Connor, on the right wing.
He took advantage of statuesque defending four minutes later, from others including O'Connor, to drill home a left footed shot into the top left corner. In between both goals Jermaine Johnson let slip a one on one effort.
Then Bikey, who had only played ten minutes of Championship football all season before this game because of international commitments, rose to head home a 29th minute Stephen Hunt free-kick to make it three.
Deon Burton forced Marcus Hahnemann into action to keep the 3-0 lead intact for the half-time break.
"You don't see many teams coming back from three down," continued Laws. "So at half-time the important thing was to start the second half by getting a bit of pride back.
"You at least expect the players to try and go out and win the second half. But the first ten minutes of the second half was identical. Straight away, two goals within the space of a few minutes and a catalogue of mistakes."
Noel Hunt opened his account, making it 4-0, when he slid home a ball flicked over the Owl's defence on 50 minutes.
And Doyle completed his trio when he was given acres of space in the box to twist, turn and fire home a right footed shot beyond Grant for five.
Doyle was subbed immediately, after his second treble in two home games, while Bobby Convey came on four minutes later for the lively Stephen Hunt.
And the American midfielder's first touch set up the other Hunt for his second goal of the match, and Reading's sixth. Hunt stole a march on the Wednesday defence to fire past Grant from close range.
While the home faithful were bellowing out 'we want seven', Wednesday's good humoured following were responding with 'we want one'.
"I wish I could sweep it under the carpet, I wish I could say that it was a one off, and I wish I could just say that we will move onto the next game," continued Laws, who must have given his players a rocket.
"I am not going to come into the media room and slaughter everybody, it's not right. What I have said in the dressing room will stay there.
"Saturday has got to be reaction time. They have got to show a reaction to our own supporters, and maybe then we can sweep it under the carpet as a one off. We can only do that if we put in a performance against Ipswich.
"If Jim Magilton was watching that, then he will be rubbing his hands."
Laws is expecting Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate to allow him to extend the loan spell of defender Tony McMahon.
