2 world wars, 1 world cup After that 'goal' at Watford (which there's a perfectly good thread on to discuss, so this isn't the place for it... "Disappointed-the goal that never was" by Finerain) I've started wondering about acts of integrity in football matches. Or acts of pure dishonesty. Reading or non-Reading related.

I can think of a few off the top of my head to get the ball rolling...

HONESTY:

1) The only one I can think of (and memory is very hazy here!) is Robbie Fowler being given a penalty in a game a few years ago for a supposed foul tackle by the keeper (?), Fowler knew it wasn't a foul and ran up to the ref wagging his finger trying to explain it wasn't a foul but the arrogant tw*t of a ref refused to listen to him and gave it anyway IIRC. Fowler went on to have the penalty saved. I always wonder if he whispered the direction into the keeper's ear....

I remember Fowler's protest at being awarded a penalty was on the news when it happened and I'd always admired him for that. A few years ago I read his autobiography and he said that he got a letter congratulating him for upholding the honour of the game from the head of FIFA, but that at the time he'd been more concerned that he'd have to play with Shilton - the keeper - again, and that he was afraid the big guy would take it out on him later. He maintained that his miss was unintentional.

I might be wrong here but wasn't Fowler murked by someone (possibly Jason MacaTWATeer ?) scoring from the rebound ?

earleyroyal For anyone not there the words were similar to 'we've got an update on Mart Poom, he's in hospital, obviously we'ree not allowed to show a replay but we'd invite you to watch it when you get home and draw your own conclusions'.

Official complaint would be in order in my opinion, that was Mourinho-esque. Don't see how Doyle standing there while Poom flings himself at a header is his fault.

I think this is a misinterpretation. I think he gave the update about Poom and then said "obviously we can't show you the incident etc.." and at that point, he was talking about the goal. That was my interpretation, certainly, I haven't seen or heard any complaints about Doyle after the game.

might not be the same game but i remmeber when

Arsenal had a throw in Sheffield United had a player down injured. ???????????? throws the ball in and relased overmars down the right, Sheffield utd dont react as the balls out of play and they have a man down. Anyways kanu ended up scoring intpo a empty net to win the cup tie 2-1.

After the game Wenger offred to play the game again. Fifa ( or whoever) agreed and the game was replayed.

eleventh earl of mar I think you will find that the goalkeeper in the Fowler incident was actually David Seaman.

Yeah, I don't think Peter Shilton was playing then  .

Hmm maybe, retrospective apology to the PA guy if that's the case, however I heard 'update on Poom, obviously we can't show you a replay of the incident' so I assumed it was about Poom. It did seem bizarre that anyone would consider blaming Doyle.

It was McAteer. Always thought he was a twat although my opinion of him improved slighly after his note taking piss take aimed at Roy Keane as he got sent off at the Stadium of Light a few years ago.

Thanks to those who get the point of the thread.

After a bit more research this is a more accurate story, most of which has been mentioned already.

Yes it was Seaman, Liverpool vs Arsenal at Highbury. Seaman 'brought' Fowler down and Fowler admitted it wasn't a foul, and argued with the referee trying to get him to reverse the penalty decision.

Completely bizarrely the ref didn't listen to Fowler. I mean, why not??? Anyway Fowler ended up taking the penalty but hit a very soft shot which Seaman easily saved. Unfortunately Macateer scored the rebound and Liverpool ended up scoring another to win 2-1.

Fowler ended up getting a UEFA Fair Play Award for his actions. When asked if he took the penalty softly on purpose he claims it was just a bad penalty and he was actually trying to score, although could this be to appease Liverpool..?

Either way the lad's a legend, despite the other controversial stuff he got up to!

I for one was inspired and always tried to do the right thing in footy as a result, with that imaging of Fowler wagging his finger at ref stuck in my mind. Just imagine if players were doing this week in week out, the sort of inspiration it'd give our kids to be honest.

Im sure i remember Bodin getting wrongly booked once as well..

All I remember about gareth davies is him failing to control the ball one game about 3 inches from the crowd and going "SHIT!"

The PA man talked firstly at length about the "goal" and it was clear from the way he spoke that it was obvious that the replay showed it not to be a goal, hence "make your own mind up when you see it". He then went on to mention Poom and no phrase was used to link the two incidents at all. All talk of "make your own mind up when you see it" referred to the goal-that-never-was.

SCIAG A game was abandoned in the football league last year. The team that were losing (1-0) let the opposition's 'keeper score when the match was played again.

Was that the Leicester one? Player had a stroke or heart seizure at HT

Wasn't there that goal Arsenal scored against Watford when Watford put the ball out of play for an injury only for Arsenal not to give it back and go on to score?

The game got replayed though didn't it?
