Will Marek get in?

by rhroyal » 01 Oct 2008 00:29

On relegation many of us thought Matejovsky was our best chance of an instant return, and we were gutted when he went off against Forest. I imagine he'll be fit after this next international break. With the team looking good, how much of a chance do you think he'll have? He is still arguably our most technically gifted player after all.

Jem has been great and deserves to keep his place, im not a Harper hater but wow is that guy in trouble now. Gunnarson is number 1 pick for me and i think him and marek cold be quality but until jem slips up.....

I agree ... gunnar and marek, both polished performers who will undoubtably create opportunities

Jem has done well but a bit of a lightweight ... one for the future hopefully

Harps ... close thing for me, but probably the best substitute in this division

I was thinking the same about Matejovsky. Then I got to thinking does it matter? Just goes to show how much of a decent squad we have with Matejovsky and Harper having to work hard to get back into the frame and giving Coppell options from game to game.

Marek apparently returned to training this week but my guess is he will not be considered until 18th October (Preston away) and possibly later still if we do not have sufficient reserve games

When all fit there will be good depth as has been said, Harper is by no means out of the picture

Not out of the picture, but I think Bryn and Jem have really showed up Harper and how ineffective he's been this season. With all midfielders fit I think we should consider selling Harper in Jan to raise funds. For me Jem is the new Harper and has the potential to be better as he can actually tackle.

Our best midfield pairing might end up being Marek and Bikey. Obviously you wouldn't want to move Bikey at the moment, but Cisse could end up moving to CB.
In the meantime Gunnar and Karacan seem to be doing a good job. The team seems to do well with 2 hard working CMs rather than 1 creating and 1 working. They help the rest of the team play around them, and obviously S.Hunt works his nuts off too. Need to remember that we did win 6-0 with Harper in there, but while we're going well, we should stick with the current pairing.

At the moment Bryn is first choice centre mid for me. And you can see him working well with any of the others.

Any combination without him in looks a bit lightweight, especially for away games.

Bryn and Marek will be our midfield going forward i think

if that doesnt work then bring Jem back

but i feel marek and bryn are perfect to work together...

not to sure where harper fits in to all this though

Still remains to be seen whether he can fit into Coppell's preferred 4-4-2 as a central midfielder. There's no doubt in my mind that technically he's better than anyone else in our squad and there are few better in this division but Coppell's engine room is usually made up of industry and stamina rather than craft and guile.

I still take the optimistic view that he actually offers a Plan B and an alternative way of playing which could prove very useful during a 46 game season.

Until an injury / loss of form opens up a starting place, if we can play a high tempo high pressure game the opposition will have to try and match that - who better to bring on for the last 20m than MM to exploit the additional space a slightly knackered opposition will afford our midfield?

Sadly for harper it was Gunnar that he needed beside him, not the most skilful, but works, does simple things, breaks down attacks, and allows harper to play a bit more attacking.

It is no coincidence IMHO that losing Gunnar last season started our slow decline.
